Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Rendak.
Hi Brittany, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I made the big move to Los Angeles, my dream city, all the way from the windy city, Chicago at the age of 23. Not only have I loved absolutely everything about LA since I was born, I also realized it is the place I need to be in order to start a career in the entertainment industry.
I’ve always loved performing and being in front of the camera growing up. I realized I could take my love for arts, writing, and storytelling to get a degree in Journalism.
I landed my first job in the entertainment industry in less than a year living here. I now work in publicity at a top record label.
In addition, I started sharing my experiences and things to do around the city when I first moved to LA. My blog and content creation started out just for fun and then I quickly realized I could make money off of something I was so passionate about doing.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely not…
The entertainment industry is one of the hardest industry to get into and even harder to make your way to the top.
I always wanted to work in the entertainment industry and what better place to go than LA? I moved at the age of 23 with a job that would pay me $13 an hour, two suitcases, and big dreams of making it in the industry. The first struggle I faced was trying to survive on such little pay in one of the most expensive cities in the country.
After a lot of hard work and determination, I was able to land my first job in the industry. Getting my foot in the door was not an easy task, but I didn’t let that stop me. My ambition and work ethic allowed me to accomplish so many of my dreams.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I work in publicity full-time. I am also a blogger and content creator in LA.
I’m most proud of everything I’ve accomplished so far in my six years here in LA. I never imagined I would come this far so quickly.
What sets me apart is that by day I work in the entertainment industry and by weekend I’m a content creator. I work my day job in PR in the music industry at a record label. I spend my weekday nights catching up on my work as a content creator. I dedicate my weekends to shooting, editing, and batching my content.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
One of the most important things you need to break into the industry is experience. You might need to take an internship or a low-paying job, so you can use that experience as a steppingstone to land your next big gig. The one thing I regret in my journey is not taking on more internships. I worked two jobs and worked as a reporter at my college’s news station, so I was really busy. I wish I knew that it was important to make that extra time to do as many internships as you can.
My next tip is network and go meet people in similar fields that you are interested in. This business, like many other businesses, is all about the relationships you build. I love killing people with kindness, no matter how they treat me. Don’t be afraid to cold email after you apply for a job or if you find someone interesting on LinkedIn that you would like to chat with. You will get a lot of nos, but you can’t let that get you down. Don’t be afraid of failure, use it for your motivation. Confidence is key!
