Meet Bree Cooksey of Her Blank Canvas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bree Cooksey.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started Her Blank Canvas back in 2016. I had just moved back to California from Dallas after spending a year working sports and I simply felt unfulfilled and would frequently contemplate if there was more and when it would come. In my heart and in my spirit, I knew there was more than “this.” However, at the time I couldn’t pinpoint exactly what “this” was.

One day, while I was on my way to work and stuck in traffic; I subtle thought was deposited into my mind to build a community where women could support one another and flourish into all God has called them to be. Funny enough, I have those first thoughts recorded. I am huge on journaling and documenting my daily life, so when I don’t have time to physically write in my journal, I record entries in my audio journal.

Anywho, ever since that moment my life changed and the desire to help women discover their identity and purpose as yet to subside.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I don’t think anyone can pursue purpose and journey down that path without being unscathed. Since pursuing Her Blank Canvas, my road has been anything, but smooth. I have experienced and continue to experience my most challenging obstacle to date, which is taking care of a sick parent.

In 2016, I found out my mom had a rare auto-immune disease that was attacking her central nervous system and affecting her mobility. I had just come back from a birthday trip in NYC with a few of my closest friends, when I found out my mom needed emergency surgery due to several tumors that settled on her spine and brain stem. A few months prior, my mom noticed that she was having some issues with her foot that progressively got worse and ultimately they discovered the tumors. I will never forget how surreal that moment was, as my mom was explaining the surgery and the unfavorable odds of survival.

By the grace of God, she survived her surgery, but both our lives have changed drastically since then. She went from being an independent woman to losing 90% of her mobility; and for seven months I worked around the clock, trying to balance a full-time job, take care of my mom, and pursue purpose. For me it got to a point where my stress levels were so high and I was so exhausted all the time, I had to chose to focus on one thing. So, I chose to quit my job, put Her Blank Canvas to the side, and focus on my mom’s healing.

She is doing better and making progress, but it’s still a daily balance and struggle that I deal with on a daily basis.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Her Blank Canvas – what should we know?
Her Blank Canvas is an organization/ women’s ministry that helps women find their TRUE identity and purpose through faith and the word of God. For me, it is important that women understand the power they possess and use their unique characteristics to their full potential.

We are just relaunching, so we aren’t known for anything just yet. However, we will be known for bringing women from all walks of life together and giving them confidence and boldness to live out their unique God-given purpose and truth. As well as our 29:11 Vision Workshop, which is a vision board workshop to help women make their visions plain. Our first workshop is July 7th in Los Angeles and I couldn’t be more excited!

What I am most proud of and what I believe sets us apart is our boldness. Our boldness to announce our love and devotion to God. Our boldness to take risks and follow passions that fulfill us, and our boldness to love.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Patience. If you can learn to trust the journey and take into account each and every day as an opportunity to learn and grow more than the day before, you will 100% be successful. Patience is something I struggle with, but I am learning to take things step by step.
