Today we’d like to introduce you to Betty Hernandez-Tupta.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Born and raised in North East Los Angeles (Boyle Heights to be exact), I was grateful to be able to take over an existing practice in 2010. I loved the name- Back Benders, and I loved the neighborhood- just 10 minutes away from my home and I soon fell in love with all my patients and the hard work involved in running a business. In 2010 it was just me, a massage therapist and a front office person. Soon I found myself having to add on more therapists and services. The physical demands of the type of Chiropractic I practice soon aggravated my own low back injury and I then became the patient.
Through research and my own treatment, I decided to add Pilates to my wellness clinic. The combination of Chiropractic, massage and pilates really helped me over the worse of my flare ups and keep me still in tip top shape today. My office evolved again when one of my therapist became a Reiki practitioner and asked if she could add Energy healing to our services. I have always been interested in that type of healing and had experienced results in my own journey in treating my disc herniations. So I said, Heck ya! Let’s do it. That led to the addition of more heart centered services such as Vibrational Sound Healing and Crystal Healing. In fact, just last year I decided to go through a Crystal Healing Certification myself and as a forever student I will be going through a Pilates Certification in January 2018. I am proud to offer stellar, personalized and intuitive sessions.
My own treatments vary depending on the patient. I always say, I’m not your Mother’s Chiropractor but I’ll be happy to care for her too. One thing you can be sure of, I personally provide all the Chiropractic treatments, do it with intention and as an all-female staff, WE LISTEN.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. I guess that’s true with anything that’s worth doing. The transition was not one that I had hoped for and I found myself starting from scratch- essentially finding my own patients. That turned out to be a blessing in disguise as I was a completely different practitioner and a 100% different business owner with ambitious ideas. This gave me the green light to change it all and create a niche business. A wellness clinic that welcomes all but caters to women. All the financial stress melted away and I found my days booking up in advance, having enough business to support both the massage therapy and pilates side of my clinic. As the old adage says, what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. I felt like I was on steroids. LOL! Those early struggles have helped me to work smarter not harder and for that I’m grateful.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Back Benders – what should we know?
My intake forms at the top say, Dr. Beatriz H-Tupta The OG’s of Holistic Healing in NELA. That kind of sums us up. We are a little nerdy, a little edgy, a little mystical and whole lot of magical. We provide an integrated approach to holistic care. Back Benders offers Chiropractic, Massage, Pilates and Energy Healing, pretty much we got you covered. What do we specialize in? That’s easy… you! We provide a personalized approach to your body’s needs. There’s isn’t a day that goes by when a patient doesn’t tell me, Dr. Betty I think I drooled and you know what? That’s music to my ears. That shows me this patient trusts me so much that they would just doze off. It’s definitely a safe place to heal, cry, release, laugh and love. We are known for providing stellar service, intention based holistic care in a crystal and essential oil infused environment.
