Meet Bernie Shine

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bernie Shine. He and his team shared his story with us below:

Bernie Shine

Bernie has been described as “reclusive and exclusive,” a performer who quietly chooses his venues, doing it in his own unique manner. His magic is like a message in a bottle, a special surprise to those who happen to find him.

Many of his effects were created by him and are completely original. His magic is close-up and personal, intimate, and inexplicable. His audience feels like they are guests at a party hosted by this master magician/mentalist.

Bernie was a favorite performer in the “Close-Up Room” at the famous Magic Castle in Hollywood in the 1970s, when he was a young magician and law student who was befriended by such conjuring icons as Dai Vernon, Francis Carlyle, Senator Clarke Crandall, and countless others.

He continues to perform sold-out shows in public venues and also appears at private events.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s been a very smooth road. Magic is my muse; my go-to place that gets me up in the morning and keeps me awake at night.

My friend and law client, the late legendary magician Dai Vernon, said it is important to do something in life for the pure love of it. For me, that is magic. I have been doing magic since I was seven years old. Again, to quote Dai Vernon, I wasted the first six years of my life.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I perform both close-up and stage magic and mentalism/mind reading. My act is very participatory, and the audience feels like they are guests in a party I am hosting.

There’s a thin line between reality and illusion, and I like to take my audience across that line. The intent of magic is not always simply to entertain. That is a purpose, but may not be the sole one. The broader goal may be to cause one to abandon their preconceived notions to accept the idea that anything is possible.

The Covid crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and are there any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
Covid certainly put a big pause in the field of “close-up” magic!

I have always been very reclusive yet social. I describe myself as a “reclusive man about town.” I am very comfortable in my own company, and I used the isolation during the pandemic to create many new magic and mentalism effects. In fact, what my audience sees is a demonstration of obsessive-compulsive behavior coupled with reclusiveness and insomnia.
