Meet Anna Constantino of Anberc Candles in Central Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anna Constantino.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My love and obsession with candles dated back years way before the start of Anberc Candles. I love candles as it gives personality and nice aura to my place. Scents are powerful in evoking memories and good feelings. The flickering flame from the candle as well as the scent it emits gives me some comfort and put me in a relax mood.

I had a very dear friend who finished her ten years battle from cancer in 2013. She had influenced me tremendously and I have such great respect and love for her. She was able to accomplish almost all the things on her bucket list before she died. One of the most important and meaningful lessons she shared with me is about finding and pursuing my passion/s, following and chasing my dreams. She said we should not wait for a cancer, an illness, or an accident to hit us to do the things we are passionate about. We should do it while we are still young and able.

This resonates with me in 2016, a very challenging year for me. I have a daughter who was five years old and started schooling at that time. I was juggling different jobs as an Accounting and Admin Assistant in one company and some gig jobs simultaneously. I was greatly stressed and felt helpless at times. I was looking for some escape and help until it just crossed my mind to make my own candle as inspired by my dear friend. Another important inspiration is my goal to make a natural and clean candle as an alternative to the cheap yet so toxic, traditional paraffin wax candles mostly available in stores. Natural candles that are safe for my family’s health and that protect the environment. I bought a simple soy candle kit and tried making my first candle. I loved it so much and I felt recharged and renewed. This hobby had helped me relieve some of the stress from work and life’s worries. My interest in candle making grew so huge and it became my passion. I bought more kits, started learning and perfecting this craft, and never stop making candles ever since. At first, I was just making candles for myself and friends. Later, I was encouraged by great feedback and got an opportunity to be invited on two special events to showcase my candles. In March 2018, I decided to pursue my dream and passion, and Anberc Candles was officially born.

I am so grateful for all the positive and sincere support that we get especially from all the markets and events we did around Los Angeles. So humbled to be receiving a great extent of invitation from different markets and events, and to be accepted to most of the markets we applied for. Our event schedule is almost always full every weekend. I love meeting and talking with customers and so glad to have a great deal of repeat customers. I am also blessed to have met plenty of supportive artists and makers from the markets and from social media, who takes time and so generous to share and refer our business to their own followers.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It was not a smooth road at all. I still struggle up to this day learning the business framework, technology, and the process. I’ve made also a big amount of mistakes but I acknowledge it is all part of the learning process. As a candle maker, I did not have a formal training nor attended a workshop. I did a lot of googling, reading, watching YouTube videos, experimenting with different fragrance oil and essential oil blends, testing compatibility of waxes and wicks, and trying different ways to resolve candle making issues and problems.

The most challenging for me was dividing my time schedule between my candle business, my family (especially my role as a mom to a young and active school child), and my day job. I chose to be a hands-on mom to my daughter and it is important for me to participate, if not to all but to most of her activities. My husband has been juggling jobs too and I was left with all the responsibilities when it comes to my daughter and to the households. On most days, I would only have 4-5 hours of sleep and sometimes would wake up at 2 or 3 in the morning to start pouring waxes before I drop her to school and start on my day job. It was exhausting at most times but I am determined to go forward and never give up. Also, due to time constraints and lack of experience, I had difficulty on building my online storefront which took me a year to finish. Likewise, I struggle on making a consistent and effective social media presence. Along the way, I learned to manage my time wisely and enjoy both the unpleasant and beauty on the journey of a crafter and a business owner.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Anberc Candles story. Tell us more about the business.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Most of the things that I’ve accomplished in life and in business are product of my hardwork and determination. Although, I cannot take away the fact that sometimes luck also played a role somehow. There are circumstances and situations that are beyond our control whether it’s good or bad, but how we react to it plays a big part of being lucky. We make our own luck. I tried to be always positive and grateful to whatever blessings I receive. And to all my misfortunes, I just laugh at it. My failures made me better, and these motivate me to persevere more. I always believe that positivity attracts good fortune. The more I do my best, the more I believe I am lucky.
