Meet Andrew Phillips of The Phillips Group

Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrew Phillips.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I grew up in an accounting family, so in many ways this work has been part of my story from the beginning. My father built a respected accounting firm in Orange County that served dentists and physicians. I had a front-row seat to how trust, relationships, and specialized knowledge can make a real difference in people’s lives and businesses.

Before joining the firm, I served in the Army. That experience shaped how I lead today. It taught me discipline, adaptability, and how to stay calm under pressure. Those lessons continue to guide how I build teams and serve clients.

After my military service, I worked as an EMT for 9-1-1 ambulance services. It was meaningful work, but it did not pay enough to build a future. My dad offered me a job at the firm, and I started at the very bottom, scanning files and fetching coffee. Over time, I learned the business from the ground up, eventually working my way into a position as an accountant and later as his office manager.

Once I understood the operational and financial side of the firm, I stepped into business development and entrepreneurship. I learned how to grow companies, build brands, and create meaningful connections. That experience gave me a strategic lens that I now apply to accounting and advisory work.

In 2021, my wife Laura and I acquired my father’s firm and transformed it into The Phillips Group. Today, we are a modern accounting, tax, and advisory firm that works exclusively with healthcare professionals. Since then, we have nearly doubled in size, expanded to serve clients in more than 20 states, and earned recognition from Inc. Magazine as one of America’s Best Workplaces, along with multiple Fastest-Growing Company awards here in Orange County.

More than the accolades, what I am most proud of is how we have redefined what an accounting firm can be. We have built a proactive, flat-fee advisory model that gives dentists and physicians clarity, confidence, and strategy to grow their practices. It has been an incredible journey; honoring my father’s legacy while building something forward-thinking for the next generation.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it has not been a smooth road. When we decided to take over the firm, it wasn’t a handoff with a safety net. Laura and I had to qualify for a loan to buy the business. We put everything we had on the line to make it happen. I had already used my VA loan benefit to buy our home, so that home, along with our retirement account and our life savings, became collateral for the business loan. If it failed, it wouldn’t just hurt financially. It would be personal.

The transition itself was far from seamless. Like many family business transitions, it came with tension, mixed emotions, and resistance. I had to earn the trust of clients who had known my father for decades. Some left. Others stayed but watched carefully. At the same time, I had to make hard financial decisions that were long overdue. My father had not meaningfully raised fees in almost twenty years. In order to build a sustainable company, we had to make those adjustments. That was not easy. It was uncomfortable and, at times, painful.

We also faced big firms trying to buy us out with huge paydays. The offers were flattering, but the reality was that saying yes would have meant giving up the vision we had built and turning our clients into just another account on a spreadsheet. It might have been the easier path, but it would have been the wrong one.

And then there’s the personal side. My wife, Laura, and I both serve as executives in the business. We love what we do, but it means we bring work home with us. We talk about strategy over dinner. We work through tough decisions at midnight. There’s no clean line between personal life and business life. It’s messy, and it takes a lot of trust and communication to keep moving forward together.

The road has been hard. But those struggles are exactly what make this journey meaningful. We have built something lasting and modern while protecting the soul of a family business. We have grown a firm that stands for something real: clarity, trust, and the belief that healthcare professionals deserve more than basic compliance work. Every scar along the way has made us stronger. Every tough decision has sharpened our vision. And standing where we are now, I can say with confidence that the risk was worth it. We built something we believe in.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about The Phillips Group?
The Phillips Group is a modern accounting, tax, and advisory firm headquartered in Orange County, California. We work exclusively with healthcare professionals, primarily dentists and physicians, across more than twenty states. Our entire firm is built around one idea: when you pair specialized financial strategy with proactive guidance, healthcare professionals can build more profitable, less stressful businesses.

What sets us apart is our niche focus. We don’t try to be everything to everyone. We understand the business side of healthcare at a deep level, from associate careers to ownership transitions and practice growth. That means we don’t just file tax returns; we help our clients make strategic decisions with confidence.

Everything we do is anchored in what we call our Three Pillars: Client-Focused, Innovative, and Compassionate. Client-Focused means we truly listen and build lasting relationships. Innovative means we challenge the traditional accounting model and create better systems that give clients clarity and control. Compassionate means we take the time to give back to the community, support causes that matter, and remember that behind every business is a person and a family with real goals and real pressures.

We also deliver our services in a way that’s different. Most of our clients are on flat-fee monthly plans that combine tax preparation, accounting, and year-round advisory. For these clients, there are no hourly bills and no surprise costs. They have a dedicated team they can actually reach, with proactive support instead of reactive answers. We still have a few clients on our annual, “tax compliance only” plans, but we’re slowly and methodically transitioning them as well.

We’re proud to have taken what started as a small family firm and transformed it into something truly forward-thinking. Along the way, we’ve been honored with recognition from Inc. Magazine as one of America’s Best Workplaces, by the Orange County Business Journal as one of the Fastest-Growing Private Companies, and by OneOC (an affiliate of the Points of Light Foundation) as one of Orange County’s Top 50 Most Community-Minded Companies. But what matters most is not the awards; it’s the trust of the doctors we serve and the impact we make on their financial lives.

Our brand stands for clarity, strategy, and care. We take pride in being more than just accountants. We are strategic partners helping healthcare professionals protect what they’ve built, minimize taxes legally and intelligently, and create stronger financial futures. That is what drives us every day.

What matters most to you?
What matters most to me is people. Everything I’ve built and everything I’ve worked for comes back to that. I care deeply about the people who trust us with their livelihoods, the team members who choose to build their careers with us, and the family that has stood beside me through every high and low.

When I think about why we took the risk to buy the business, why we put our home and savings on the line, and why we’ve pushed so hard to grow, the answer is love. Love for my family’s legacy. Love for the clients we serve, who have poured everything they have into caring for others. Love for the team that shows up every day with purpose and heart.

This work isn’t just about numbers or spreadsheets. It’s about helping people build the lives they’ve worked so hard for. It’s about protecting their dreams, creating clarity where there’s uncertainty, and standing with them in the moments that matter most.

That’s why compassion is one of our core pillars. It’s why we give back to the community and why we choose to stay independent when bigger firms come knocking. Because this isn’t just a business to me. It’s a mission.

At the end of the day, what matters most is making a difference for people. If we can do that with integrity, clarity, and heart, then we’re doing exactly what we’re meant to do.
