Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Tatum.
Hi Amy, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My story begins in high school where my passion for all things skincare began. However, I never thought about pursuing a career as an esthetician- it wasn’t something I heard people around me talking about, so when I graduated I went off to SJSU and then ended up working in Human Resources for a couple of years. Then it wasn’t until three years ago, when I was venting to one of my friends about how unhappy I was in my career that I decided to take control of my life and do something I actually loved. I quit my HR job and enrolled in an esthetics program the following week!
After receiving my esthetics license, I did mobile skincare services around LA for a couple of months before landing my first job as a Skin Therapist. Working for different companies allowed me to grow as an esthetician, but I knew deep down that I wanted to work for myself. This past June, I decided to take a risk and went solo. Working for myself has allowed me to build amazing relationships with my clients and has also allowed me to give my clients better results with the products and modalities that I specifically select.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has been a smooth road, but of course there were some bumps and dips that I’m grateful for because they made me a better esthetician and business owner.
The first challenge I encountered was in my esthetics program. It had its challenges since it began a month before the entire country was shut down due to the pandemic, but I was determined to finish and start my new career. And so my passion is what allowed me to push through hours of Zoom classes and get my esthetics license.
The second challenge was actually in me trusting myself; trusting that I had all the tools needed to be successful. And in order to trust myself I had to do what I thought was the scariest thing which was leaving my job as a Skin Therapist where I had grown very comfortable. One day I had to have a talk with myself about my dreams and if I was doing all I needed to do to get closer to them. Once I realized that I was the one holding me back from those dreams I decided to be fearless and “just do it.” Now months later I’m happier than I’ve ever been all while doing what I love as a solo esthetician.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Tatum Skin?
Tatum Skin is a solo, Afro-Latina owned and operated skincare studio.
I offer customized facials and full body waxing, and my clients love that they are able to get multiple things done in one visit. The main concerns my facial clients express are acne, hyperpigmentation, and aging, so I wanted to find products and modalities that would address those concerns and MORE! After a lot of research and trials, I found gentle yet effective, professional-grade products that don’t break the bank. And I have curated treatment plans that are fully customized per client to help alleviate problematic skin conditions and begin a path toward long-lasting, transformative radiance in multi-ethnic skin tones. The response has been overwhelmingly positive from my clients!
When designing my space, I wanted to make sure that it wasn’t just a place where clients went to get facials and waxes done but a space that allowed them to walk in and be able to escape the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles for an hour or two or even sometimes three depending on the services they selected! I’m really proud of the space that I’ve created. Success for me is when clients express how much they’ve been looking forward to their appointments since their last one because that lets me know that I’m not just taking care of their skin, but them as a whole.
What I am most proud of brand-wise is recently having the amazing opportunity to work for Alicia Keys’s skincare line ‘Keys Soulcare.’ Tatum Skin was contacted to perform mini-facials for about 50 of their guests at their most recent event in West Hollywood. Moments like those remind me that I’m exactly where I should be, and encourage me to continue to face my fears and chase my dreams.
Any big plans?
My future plans for Tatum Skin are to one day have brick-and-mortar and maybe even my own skincare line! The biggest change is coming next Spring and I can’t say much yet, but it’s going to be amazing! So definitely be on the lookout for that!
