Today we’d like to introduce you to Ameerah Mcpherson.
Hi Ameerah, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
In 2021, at 21 years of age, and just two years out of high school, I packed up my car and drove from New Jersey across the country to California — a 30-day journey that changed my life for the better. For the first time, I left my home state completely on my own, and each mile became a step in freedom, faith, and self-discovery. I learned how to listen to my intuition, trust my instincts, and stay grounded while navigating unfamiliar places. That trip wasn’t just about reaching a new destination, it marked the start of rediscovering who I was outside of the world I grew up in, outside of the routines, people, and places that once defined me.
During that cross-country drive, I was growing through a season of transition after ending a difficult relationship and navigating my mental health. The open road gave me space to breathe and reconnect with myself. While on this journey, I began to create daily practices that allowed me to nurture the teenager I was to then be able to make room for the woman I was becoming. During this pivotal time, Smylism was born — a philosophy and practice rooted in smyling from the inside out, aligning your inner world so your outer expression reflects one of self-awareness and self-mastery. The practice of Smylism became the foundation for my company, We Rise Within, the home and heartbeat of this work. Smylism reminds us that a more joyful life isn’t something we wait for, it’s something we cultivate and create from within.
Today, I’m the founder of We Rise Within, where I continue that mission — helping people reconnect with themselves through education, workshops, and mindful conversations. My principle is that all change starts from within. When people strengthen their relationship with themselves, they strengthen their relationship with life — with their communities, their purpose, and the world around them. Everything I do now stems from that simple truth: when we rise within, we rise together.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road hasn’t been smooth, but I remind myself often that every challenge I face is shaping the person I am and the purpose I carry today. The period between graduating high school and stepping into young adulthood was one of the most transformative—and most revealing—times of my life. I began taking on new responsibilities, relationships carried more weight, and suddenly I was expected to know who I was and where I was going, without any real guide on how to get there.
That growth didn’t happen overnight. A lot of it unfolded as I navigated my new life here in California. As of now—October 2025—it’s been about four years since I made that move. Those first few years were marked by building a foundation: finding stable housing, understanding myself outside the structure I grew up in, and learning to meet the pace of California. At first, I didn’t have many financial obligations—no car note, no rent—so instead, my energy went toward finding community. Coming from Newark, NJ, where life felt more familiar, being surrounded by so many cultures, energies, and ways of life, showed me that life could look and feel completely different depending on where you stand.
As I was adjusting to Los Angeles, a new set of challenges arose. It’s a fast-paced city filled with visionaries and ambition, and it’s easy to lose yourself in the constant pressure to define “what’s next” or “who you’re becoming.” I had to remind myself often that my value wasn’t tied to a title or a role, but to my authenticity. Staying grounded in self-reflection and community became essential. Through Smylism—a philosophy rooted in “smyling” from the inside out, aligning your inner world so your outer expression reflects self-awareness and mastery—I found tools to navigate those pressures with grace.
Another one of the biggest challenges I’ve faced has been healing my relationship with my parents. I grew up in Newark, New Jersey—known for its grit, resilience, and deep cultural roots—a place I’ll always respect and cherish. My childhood carried both love and hardship, shaped by moments of instability that tested my sense of safety and belonging. As I grew older, I began to see my parents not just as figures in my story, but as humans navigating their own unhealed experiences. That realization allowed me to approach them with more grace, understanding, and compassion—recognizing that forgiveness doesn’t erase the past, but it helps create more empowering stories within. Even in adulthood, that healing journey continues. I’m learning to forgive, to accept people as they are, and to move forward with love. My growth has taught me to love without attachment, to release expectations, and to honor everyone’s individual timeline.
Journaling became my anchor. It was how I built a relationship with myself and began understanding the inner systems that shaped me—my mind as the home of my thoughts, and my body as the home of my emotions. Through that process, Smylism became more than a concept; it became a lifestyle rooted in self understanding, compassion, and awareness. Those same principles led me to facilitate workshops at Safe Place for Youth in Venice, CA, and to co-found Read to Apply, a community book club dedicated to turning knowledge into applied wisdom.
Each obstacle I’ve faced has ultimately served as a teacher, reminding me that alignment doesn’t mean perfection—it means staying devoted to the process of becoming.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My company, We Rise Within, serves as the home of Smylism — a philosophy and practice centered on self-awareness, clarity, and self-mastery. We Rise Within offers transformative workshops, habit and success coaching, and community-based gatherings that guide people back to themselves. It was born from a vision to help individuals reconnect with who they are — not through quick fixes or surface-level motivation, but through sustainable practices that nurture the mind, body, and spirit.
Smylism remains at the heart of everything we do — a living practice of “smyling from the inside out.” It’s not just a philosophy; it’s a way of being that reminds us transformation starts within. Through Smylism, we invite people to learn the how to — how to rise above limitations, align with purpose, and live with awareness — because when you rise within, every part of your life begins to rise too.
What sets We Rise Within apart is its depth, intentionality, and integration. Our programs merge inner healing with real-world application — emotional, spiritual, and practical — creating experiences that encourage people to embody what they learn rather than simply consume it. Every offering is designed to inspire reflection, authenticity, and connection, empowering individuals to take ownership of their growth from the inside out.
At We Rise Within, we want people to know that transformation doesn’t happen by chance — it happens by choice, intention, and awareness. Our work is for those who are ready or interested in turning inward to reconnect with their truth. Whether it’s through Smylistic based workshops, one-on-one coaching, or community gatherings, every experience we offer is designed to help people rise from within — with clarity, confidence, and compassion. We’re not here to give people a new identity; we’re here to help them remember who they already are.
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
People can connect and collaborate with me through Smyle x Smylism, where I offer workshops, speaking engagements, and creative collaborations rooted in self-awareness and transformation. I love partnering with community organizations, schools, wellness programs, and individuals who share the desire to create spaces that encourage reflection, healing, and growth.
If you’re an organization or creative looking to co-create experiences that empower others to reconnect with themselves — through mindfulness, peer to peer sharing, or intentional living — I welcome those collaborations. I also work privately with individuals who are ready to deepen their personal development journey or bring more clarity and alignment into their lives.
For those who simply want to support the mission, engaging with Smylism — whether by attending an event, joining a workshop, or sharing our message — makes a difference. My hope is that every connection becomes a ripple of impact. You can stay in touch or reach out to collaborate through my social platforms linked in the feature.
