Today we’d like to introduce you to Allie Vilches.
Hi Allie, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I have always had the creative bug. Growing up I was involved in dance, theater, and music. I bought my first camera when I was 15 and fell in love instantly. I always saw photography as a hobby while I pursued other avenues for a career. In 2016, I graduated from The Los Angeles Film School and began working as a freelance video editor. I really enjoyed it, but in 2020, I decided I wanted a change and officially launched my photography business and never looked back.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There have been plenty of struggles, no doubt! I spent much of my 20’s not knowing what I wanted to do, bouncing from photography back to editing and wondering where my life would take me. When I finally quit my dead-end job to focus on my business, it was a scary time. COVID-19 came here around the same time and there was a big level of uncertainty. I was lucky enough to have a fairly established client list so I was able to keep myself afloat, but it was definitely a scary time. Even now, there are still struggles. I make sure I keep myself educated and always push myself to improve with each photo shoot. Furthermore, photography is an oversaturated market. I can name four friends from my childhood who are also photographers. I like to take that challenge head-on, however. I believe there is a place for anyone who wants to create, regardless of who else is out there.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a photographer based in Southern California. I got my start in newborn photography when my niece was born, then shifted to family photography. I love taking photos for every milestone, so my work includes graduation photos, family photos, maternity, and weddings. I love capturing authentic moments from my clients and strive to get my clients comfortable in front of the camera. There’s lots of laughter, dancing, and giddy moments when I take photos. I believe you get better pictures when your clients feel comfortable and are having fun!
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was always the creative type. I was a ballet dancer for 17 years and loved every minute of it. Because of that, I always feel best like myself when I’m doing something creative. I was never one who wanted to be the center of attention growing up. I liked to be involved in the background, just happy to be included. During the summers when I was a kid, I would make short films with my brother and the kids who my mom babysat. It shouldn’t be any surprise that I ended up working in the arts.
