Today we’d like to introduce you to Aliyah Roy.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Aliyah. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My journey in LA started in 2015. I’ve explored many career paths and I’m still not sure if this is the end all, be all, for me.. after I accomplish these goals, who knows where life will lead me next on this journey. I started school as a business major, explored psych and sociology eventually getting my AA in sociology. In my last year of school, I took a ceramics class on a whim and turned out to be pretty good at it. After working in the cannabis industry for two years I wanted to bring two of my passions together so I created Kiss the Clay – Handmade ceramic cannabis accessories. Eventually finishing school and having more time on my hands, I decided to become a lash tech, which later pushed me to attend esthetician school to be fully licensed in facials, waxing, and lashes. I am currently pursuing my esthetician career and building clientele.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has been a rocky road, but I’ve learned many lessons along the way, so I’ll say it was well worth it. I’ve struggled with just being young in a new city, finding myself, working, going to school and learning to run a business on my own all at once. I would say my biggest obstacle has been finding the discipline to keep a job, even when my creativity is at its peak and all I want to do is work on my own businesses. I’ve learned to schedule things out, route my days, keep my planner handy at all times, and most importantly work smart… Make sure at any job I’m working I have room to learn, grow, or opportunity to work on my business needs.
Tell us more about the business.
My greatest accomplishment was releasing my first Kiss the Clay collection, a 60 piece release, made in one month. I had fallen in love with pottery and being in the studio day and night. I’m known for my pottery business, going by the name “ClayBaeee”. I was proud to walk in rooms and people know me for what I do, by my business name, even if they didn’t know my real name. I specialized in ashtrays and rolling trays. I’ve taken a break from ceramics in the last year to pursue my education in esthetics. Bringing these two businesses together as well as launching upcoming stores, for example, my Clay face mask line will set me apart from others. The Clay Face mask line will be a collaboration of Kiss the Clay x Grounded Complexion, clay skincare (releasing February 2020). Kiss the Clay will also be fully rebranded before the third year anniversary with a new collection releasing while Grounded Complexion is flourishing into a full spa.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I’m not quite sure about luck… Many opportunities have been presented to me, but I believe my fearlessness has got me to where I am today. I’m always open to opportunities and if it feels right I’ll jump into it. I’ve done this with moving to LA, taking a ceramics class, becoming an esthetician, to now becoming a bartender. Once my mind is set on something, I give it 100%. I believe my energy attracts me to what is for me.
