Today we’d like to introduce you to Alison Ogden.
Alison, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started singing as soon as I could talk, and the first thing I said I wanted to be when I grew up was a famous singer. My entire life, I’ve never wavered, after being constantly told to play it safe and secure a backup plan. As the years have gone by I’ve come to learn, the people who have told me to have something to fall back on aren’t the people who are willing to risk everything to be happy. In my world, backup plans are nothing more than an excuse to take the easy way out, which is something I have never done and will never do. Since three, my joy has come from constant engagement in theater, dance, vocal training, and countless performances in any venue I could find. Whether it was involvement through school or extracurricular, little Alison was always the first person to sign up. Drive like this is what brought me to be able to perform in Disney’s Candlelight Processional alongside Jodie Benson, attend Belmont University’s renowned School of Music, be a part of televised auditions for Season 21 of ABC’s American Idol, and so much more. Having the opportunity to work alongside such seasoned professionals in the music industry has solidified how much my career in RnB/Pop Music means to me and how capable I am to achieve superstardom. I am willing to do whatever it takes to show little Alison who wasn’t sure she was going to find her place in this world, that she is more than capable to do what she’s always dreamed of.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Growing up in an EXTREMELY small town on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, my dream of a successful career in the music industry was not always one that was understood or supported. I was fortunate to have such a strong support system in my family, but the avenues in such a rural town were not always there. As worth it as it was, traveling to find opportunities and having very little time to decompress as a child was very emotionally and mentally taxing. I struggled with an extreme Obsessive Compulsive Anxiety Disorder, known as Trichotillomania. Trich, for short, is essentially the lack of an ability to control the urge to pull out your own hair due to such an overwhelming amount of anxiety that has manifested into physical action. Some people affected by this pull out the hair on their heads, and my areas of choice were my eyelashes and eyebrows. Trichotillomania is a shame-filled, vicious disease that is hard to break out of and lead to a horrible amount of bullying in my youth as well as lost opportunities in the performing arts due to the way I looked. After years of struggling, and countless specialists, I found comfort in like-minded people and accepting myself through music. It sounds cliché, I know, but I truly found so much love and appreciation for myself through the release of great music and great friends; that was the end of my Trichotillomania.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Los Angeles-based, Nashville “born” artist Alison Ogden is a powerful force to be reckoned with. Alison Ogden is an upbeat and fierce RnB/Pop vocalist originally from the Eastern Shore of Maryland, featured on this season of ABC’s American Idol. Her honey-coated, sensual vocals are clearly rooted in her inspirations in the likes of Whitney Houston, Christina Aguilera, Queen, and Aretha Franklin. Comparable to no one, Alison Ogden is the next pop superstar, with the perfect range of vulnerability to sass. Unlike your typical pop artist who will write a quick and easy song lacking depth, Alison is a triple threat, here for the long run to present the full package of performance, vulnerability, and relatability.
What makes you happy?
Of course, performing is what makes me feel like my true self, more than anything else. It’s absolutely indescribable, the amount of joy and release I get from putting everything out there on the stage or writing/recording a song. But aside from my career, I am extremely involved in my relationships with my family members and value that love more than anything else. You cannot replace the unconditional love shared in a family, whether it’s by blood or the family you choose in friendship. I also find a great deal of joy in the peace that comes from practicing gratefulness, practicing mindfulness, having time alone with nature, and exercising. Taking time to protect my energy keeps me excited for every day.
