Today we’d like to introduce you to Aaron Urso.
Aaron, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was a former athlete since I was a kid, my main sport was baseball, but I played everything. I went to a college try out and injured my shoulder. From there, I got accepted into a different school in Florida, my best friend at the time was my roommate, and I never took the time to heal my shoulder, so I forgot about baseball. I slowly got into the party scene in college, and even after my first year when I decided to school back home in NY I still kept partying.
Two years later, I was on the beach with a bunch of my friends, and we decided to play football. As I sprinted for a pass on the first play of the game, I fell and collapsed. I couldn’t breathe or see straight, and I was extremely out of shape. That same week I decided to go into the gym and start my journey. I always enjoyed working out, but this time around felt different. I basically fell in love with it and found what I was truly passionate about.
Four years after I start working out, I decided to become a personal trainer. From there continued to train myself and competed in a fitness competition to test myself and learn more about the sport. This also helped a lot with understanding nutrition for my clients. Fast forward three years of being a trainer, I hit a plateau in my business and was VERY comfortable, still living at home and didn’t really have any bigger goals. I then took a spontaneous vacation to LA/California with my now GF and … I didn’t want to go back home!
Six weeks later we moved to LA, and my real Journey began! I got a trainer job at crunch in West Hollywood. The process started out rough, not taking into account my finances, and rent, I quickly went broke. If it wasn’t for my girlfriend helping support me, I probably wouldn’t have made it. I did get a little support from my family to help as well.
But it was nowhere close to the money I truly needed. This was a big step in life for me because I really wanted to be an adult and not need help. I wanted to make this happen by myself. Three months into moving I finally started building a business and getting comfortable. After 2.5 years at the crunch, I had a great business for myself built up, but once again I was getting comfortable which is something I was used to doing.
I decided to start my own business and keep pushing myself to go to the next level… to set higher goals and reach them… and one of the reasons I believed I could be I related it to the gym. That was always my attitude I had in the gym, and I always accomplished what I set my mind too. Now here I am today, I have my own business set up for myself, and it’s only getting better!
Has it been a smooth road?
Somewhat explained in the previous question, but money was a big factor. Also getting out of my own comfortability and allowing myself or forcing myself to try to do more.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I’m a personal trainer, fitness coach and I am proud of being able to make my clients happy. Getting them to where they want to be and having them reach their goals makes me happy. I think the three things that sets me apart from others is 1 I am drug-free.
Unfortunately, in this industry there are a lot of drugs involved with people getting into shape, and I never have nor will I ever take that road. 2 is experience, and I think this is HUGE. I see A LOT of trainers who are very book smart but haven’t done half the things they “know” to their own body.
Some aren’t even in shape, which I don’t even understand what that’s about. As I always say, experience will always win.. you can’t just talk the talk you have to also walk the walk.
Lastly, three is my creativity. I can look at a machine or a weight and ten different exercises pop into my mind. It’s just how my mind works, and as a trainer, this is very beneficial to keep your clients entertained.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I think this city is one of the best places you could have a business like mine. Part of it is definitely luck and meeting the right people, but you can charge what you are actually worth in this city and make a business out of it.
The improvements here are the same improvements everywhere, there is nothing just about LA that needs to be improved other than people poor attitudes over nothing and the way some people drive lol.
