Lisa Mayer of Culver City on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Lisa Mayer. Check out our conversation below.

Good morning Lisa, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Something outside of work that brings me a lot of joy is sailing, which I learned in 2025. It’s been especially meaningful because it requires being completely present. When you’re on the water, there’s no room for distraction—you’re tuned into the moment you’re in.

It’s brought a sense of freedom and adventure, but also connection. Learning something new, trusting the process, and sharing that experience with others has been incredibly rewarding. It’s helped me stay calm, adaptable, and centered—qualities I naturally bring into my work and leadership style.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My career has naturally evolved within wellness and beauty. One of my first businesses was Integrative Bodywork, where I focused on healing arts, aromatherapy and various massage modalities to support balance and wellness.

I then opened Petite Spa in the heart of Santa Monica, which I owned and operated for 15 years. In 2017, I sold the spa to pivot toward something more specialized and forward-focused. That’s when I opened a boutique dedicated to lashes and brows, along with a curated gift lounge.

This was during the rise of microblading and semi-permanent makeup, and the concept really took off. Today, Feather is still going strong with a small, dedicated team, and the lash and brow industry continues to thrive. Each chapter has been rewarding by building thoughtful, sustainable businesses.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
Bonds are restored by creating an environment where people can let their guard down. When someone feels safe enough to decompress, to be themselves without judgment, their true light comes through. Trust, presence, and consistency allow people to reconnect—not just with others, but with themselves as well.

What fear has held you back the most in your life?
My speech impediment once held me back—but it made me stronger.
I learned to speak anyway—to lead, to show up, to be heard.
My voice is imperfect, and that imperfection made me brave.
It shaped who I am, drawing me toward difference, toward people with accents and stories.
We all have our quirks. This one made me.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes—the public version of me is the real me. I’m not someone who performs or puts on a persona. I don’t rely on labels, status, or outward markers to define my worth or identity. Those things don’t make me who I am.

What matters to me is authenticity. If I love something, it’s because it resonates with me—not because of its price point or its name. That same value shows up in how I work and how I connect with people.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What do you think people will most misunderstand about your legacy?
I think it’s important to clarify that the legacy I’ve built is truly my own. It wasn’t bought, inherited, or funded by someone else. I built it brick by brick, starting with a bank loan at a time when I had no assets—just belief, vision, and a willingness to work hard.

There were no investors behind me. What carried me forward was a dreamer’s mindset paired with discipline, consistency, and resilience. That experience shaped how I lead today—I understand what it takes to build something from the ground up, and I don’t take any part of that journey lightly.
