Life & Work with Tyrell Martin of Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyrell Martin

Hi Tyrell, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in Lawrenceville, Georgia, raised by a single mother alongside my older brother. My Cambodian grandmother played a pivotal role in my upbringing while my mom worked multiple jobs to support us. As a child, I had a deep passion for music and art, but my environment felt limiting. I saw a few paths to success: joining the wrong crowd, excelling academically, or pursuing athletics. I chose the latter and dedicated much of my childhood to sports.

At 14, my world expanded when I discovered fashion and modeling through Tumblr, inspired by artists and young models like Luka Sabbat. This newfound passion led me to explore modeling more seriously. A crucial turning point came when my track coach, Coach Andre, encouraged me to move to California. He saw potential beyond being a student-athlete and suggested I move to LA to pursue modeling.

In LA, I connected with creative individuals and faced numerous challenges, including financial difficulties and mental health struggles. I navigated tough times, including sleeping in my car and dealing with family issues, but remained determined. Despite these obstacles, I managed to sign with an agency, secure modeling jobs, and build valuable relationships in the industry. I also launched my own e-commerce business, which has been a significant milestone.

Currently, I’m rebranding my furniture e-commerce business, using it as a creative outlet and a stepping stone toward a career in creative direction. After a successful launch last year, I’m expanding the business while continuing to advance my modeling career, aiming to secure larger and more impactful opportunities.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. I faced several significant struggles:

Financial Hardships: Moving to LA with no plan and only $1,000. Moving to different apartments and with different roommates. Having to juggle multiple jobs to make ends meet. At one point, I even had to sleep in my car.

Mental health: Adjusting to a new environment without a support network was tough. I dealt with a lot of internal struggles and had to navigate difficult family relationships while trying to stay focused on my goals.

Modeling: Breaking into the fashion and modeling world presented its own set of obstacles. There were many ups and downs, from building connections to trying to figure it out in general.

Despite these difficulties, I’ve learned a lot and continue to push forward, driven by my passion and determination.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in managing a furniture e-commerce business, where I use my creativity to design and curate unique pieces. I’m most proud of the successful launch of my brand last year, which not only generated strong sales but also allowed me to express my creativity and vision in a meaningful way.

What sets me apart is my ability to blend my background in fashion and modeling with my work in furniture design. My experience in the creative industry informs my approach to product design and marketing, making my brand stand out with a distinct aesthetic and innovative concepts.

I’m particularly proud of how I’ve leveraged my diverse experiences and challenges to build a brand that reflects both my personal style and professional expertise.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
From a young age, I was both curious and creative. I developed a deep passion for music, often immersing myself in diverse genres—artists like Mac Miller and A$AP Rocky were staples on my MP3 player during bus rides. I also had a strong love for art and would often find myself sneaking into the art classroom during lunch breaks to refine my graphic design skills.

I’ve always been determined and resourceful. Even when faced with challenges or feeling limited by my environment, I consistently sought out ways to express my interests. While I was heavily involved in sports and devoted much of my time to athletics, my fascination with fashion and creativity grew as I matured. My drive has always been fueled by creativity and a desire to make the most of every opportunity that comes my way.
