Today we’d like to introduce you to Shelby Iniguez.
Hi Shelby, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My Story
Ever since I was 12 years old, I knew I wanted to do hair. In 2014, I graduated high school and went straight to Toni & Guy for cosmetology. By November 2015, I had my license and was ready to start my career.
But life had other plans.
At 19, I found out I was pregnant while in an abusive relationship. My pregnancy was high-risk, and I spent most of it on bed rest. I tried to start working but after just two weeks, I was put back on bed rest due to complications.
It felt like everything was stopping me before I even had a chance to begin. But deep down, I knew this wasn’t the end of my story.
In 2017, when my daughter was 7 months old, I knew I had to change my life. I was in a toxic environment and needed to support us, so I started applying to salons. I briefly assisted but after a month, I took a risk and went straight behind the chair at a busy salon in Orange County, with very little real experience.
On my first day, someone showed me how to balayage in about 30 seconds and told me to try it. I was terrified, but I took my first client anyway. That moment changed everything.
I learned fast because I had to. Within six months, I built enough clientele to go out on my own and started renting a chair in Huntington Beach. I worked constantly, early mornings, late nights, weekends, even holidays, because I wasn’t just building a career, I was building a way out.
My path wasn’t traditional. Most stylists assist for years before going independent, but I didn’t have that luxury. I was a young mom who needed to provide, so I figured it out as I went.
After a year and a half of nonstop work, I reached my goal of being fully booked and moved into my own suite in 2019. Then in 2020, in the middle of COVID, I took another leap and upgraded to a larger space — even with so much uncertainty.
That same year, I left my abusive relationship, and everything began to shift.
As the industry reopened, my business grew quickly. I became booked out months in advance, hired an assistant, and started stepping into education, something I discovered I truly love. Because I didn’t have much guidance when I was starting out, I’m passionate about helping other stylists build confidence in their placement, formulation, and technique.
I’ve also invested in myself by taking classes from artists I’ve always admired, something that once felt out of reach.
Today, I specialize in Balayage, Blonding, and Corrective color, and I’ve built a loyal clientele through consistency, hard work, and real experience. What started as survival has grown into something I’m incredibly proud of and I’m now stepping into education, with the goal of helping other stylists build confidence and create their own version of success.
This industry didn’t just give me a career, it gave me independence, purpose, and the ability to completely transform my life.
Over the past 10 years, I’ve grown in every way, and I’m still learning every single day. That’s the beauty of this industry, there’s always another level.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road.
I started my career at 19, pregnant, in an abusive relationship, and on bed rest for most of my pregnancy. I had just gotten licensed and was ready to work, but everything felt like it was holding me back before I even had a chance to start.
When I finally got behind the chair, I didn’t have the typical training or years of assisting, I had to figure everything out in real time while also trying to support my daughter and navigate a toxic environment.
I was in survival mode for a long time. I worked nonstop, had no boundaries, and said yes to everything just to build stability.
There were a lot of moments where it would’ve been easier to quit, but I didn’t.
It wasn’t smooth, but it made me who I am and I wouldn’t trade that.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a hairstylist specializing in balayage, blonding, and corrective color, known for high impact, lived in results that grow out seamlessly. My work is very intentional from placement to formulation, everything is customized to the client, their lifestyle, and the long-term result.
My path into this industry wasn’t traditional, which forced me to learn quickly and trust my instincts behind the chair. Because of that, I don’t rely on one method, I focus on understanding the “why” behind everything I do, which allows me to create consistent, tailored results.
I’ve built my clientele through transformations, especially color corrections, and I take a lot of pride in elevating my clients’ hair while still protecting its integrity.
What sets me apart is how I balance impact with realism. I create bold, dimensional color, but I’m also focused on longevity, hair health, and making sure my clients feel confident maintaining their look.
I’m most proud of building my career from the ground up and turning it into something that’s consistently in demand.
I’m also stepping into education, which is something I’m really passionate about. My goal is to help other stylists create intentional results, understand formulation, and build real confidence behind the chair.
At the end of the day, I’m not just creating hair, I’m creating results that last and an experience my clients trust.
What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most to me is creating a loving, happy, and stable life for myself, my daughter, and my fiancé.
Everything I’ve built in my career comes back to that. I didn’t come from an easy or predictable situation, so having peace, stability, and something I can truly call my own means everything to me.
I also really value growth both personally and professionally. I never want to feel stuck. Whether it’s learning new techniques, evolving my work, or stepping into education, I’m always focused on becoming better and pushing myself to the next level.
And lastly, impact matters to me. Behind the chair, it’s about helping my clients feel confident and like the best version of themselves. And as I grow, it’s about helping other stylists feel capable, supported, and confident in their own careers too.
At the end of the day, it’s about building something meaningful, a career, a life, and opportunities that I didn’t always have.
I’m living the life I once dreamed of, and that means everything to me.
