Life & Work with Sami Harris

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sami Harris.

Sami Harris

Hi Sami, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
I am an autistic writer, podcaster, and social media content creator looking to change the societal perception and stigmas around autism and disability as a whole. My podcast, Hautistic, coming in June of this year, dives into all things neurodivergence, disability, and pop culture while demystifying taboos and challenging the status quo.

Currently, I am a micro-influencer creating disability and lifestyle content on TikTok and Instagram. I also create content about my special interests – dead malls and pop culture. My goal in content creation is to cultivate a community of neurodivergent people and allies who are passionate about creating change in society. I also hope to one day write my memoirs and continue my endeavors in the DEI space.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It’s been challenging to be so vocal on the internet about something that so many people already have preconceived notions about. Being openly autistic online has made it more difficult for me to secure brand deals and partnerships, but it has helped me to create an authentic and supportive community around me of those going through similar experiences. Speaking out on injustices is always going to come with its own set of obstacles, but the rewards are far greater.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I have created lifestyle content online since 2011, making the transition into disability-related content in 2021. In my time as a micro-influencer, I have worked with brands such as Lancome, Urban Decay, Kiehl’s, Pacsun, Urban Outfitters, Monty’s Good Burger, Topicals, Nordstrom, and Donut Friend, among others.

Currently, I am most well-known on social media for producing video essays and short-form content about disability, dead malls, and popular culture. I have also previously written for publications such as Consequence of Sound, Adolescent Content, Sex With Emily, Uniquely Aligned, and Lithium Magazine. I will be releasing my podcast, Hautistic, to the world in late May/early June, and can’t wait to share it with you all!
