Life & Work with Megan Orozco

Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Orozco.

Hi Megan, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started to make jewelry between 2009-2010 so, I was 19 going into my 20’s. At the time, I was working at SLOW clothing on Melrose and I loved it! It was also a consignment shop so, I would bring in old jewelry of mine and upcycle them to sell in the back shop that was connected to the main room. I remember selling the first piece of jewelry that I made. It was one earring that had different beads, charms, and a feather attached to it. Knowing that someone liked a design I made enough to buy it was a pretty cool feeling, but it wasn’t until a few years later that I decided jewelry design was what I wanted to do. I had gone to culinary school and worked different retail jobs trying to decide what was a good fit and in 2014, I took things into my own magical hands and created Mystic Bones. The journey has been stressful, time-consuming, and exhausting, but I have grown so much as a creator because of it. Don’t get me wrong, it’s also been very rewarding in many different ways! I’ve met so many amazing small business owners and have been able to collaborate with other artists, which would push me out of my comfort zone at times, but I feel that is needed for growth. I’m so excited to see what is to come for Mystic Bones and I can’t wait to share all of my intuitive creations with all of you.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has been a bumpy road, but running your own small business will present many different challenges. You just kind of have to expect that at one point or another. There have been plenty of times when I just wanted to give up because I wasn’t seeing any growth within my business as far as revenue, a following, and in turn, a lack of inspiration. Trying to stand out when there are so many other small businesses that cater to the same industry you may work in can be very hard, but having a great support system is key. Your friends and (chosen) family are the ones who will hype you up the most and I feel it’s so important to surround yourself with uplifting energy to keep you going.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a jewelry designer and a small business owner. I mainly work with crystals and different metals but have expanded to apparel and other accessories. I’d say I’m known for my wire-wrapping designs. I do a lot of different pieces like earrings and necklaces, but my personal favorite is a roach clip I make with real Quartz called Higher Vibration. Working with different mediums such as resin and cement has pushed my creative limits and it’s always fun to try something new even if it doesn’t end up working out. When creating, I put a lot of my magic and personal energy into these pieces that the wearer can feel. I believe this is what sets me apart from others. An Intuitive Connection.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My birthday is in October so, when I was younger I would always have costume parties. I loved dressing up and would pile on tons of costume jewelry it was insane. Honestly, not much has changed since I still love dressing up, but instead of buying the costume jewelry now, I just make stuff for myself, haha. I’ve always been obsessed with jewelry and when it wasn’t the spooky season, I would dress up in my moms’ clothes and stack on all of her rings and bracelets.
