Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcia Sousa.
Hi Marcia, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Brazil, where I did some modeling while attending university. After graduating, I dedicated myself entirely to my teaching career. However, to my surprise, God reopened this modeling door in 2024, when I was at a party with friends and was invited to a casting call. Getting back to modeling had crossed my mind before this casting opportunity, but I thought my height would be an issue. I guess I was wrong; many other doors have opened to me, and I am so grateful for all of them.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
In the beginning, the impostor syndrome was always at the back of my mind whenever I attended a casting call or a photoshoot. I felt like I didn’t belong there, and I had to fight that feeling. Confidence is a journey, and you build it as you learn and perfect your craft. The more you learn and feel prepared, the more confident you feel in your skin, and it shows in your photos or walk. What I have also found challenging is the amount of performative diversity and inclusion. They will include petite and plus-size models in the casting calls, but they only cast tall, slim models. In fact, most fashion shows still require a minimum height and non-inclusive sizes. Despite all these challenges, there are still designers and brands that want and prefer to work with relatable models.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As a petite plus-size model, I aim to make the unseen feel seen. We also deserve fashion, dress elegantly or sexy. We want to feel pretty and ready to conquer the world! Representation matters! Brands that understand that people need to see themselves in their ads are the ones casting models like me. I believe I can inspire other petite plus women when they see me walking in a fashion show or in a brand campaign ad. I want them to be their beautiful selves unapologetically because we are not asking for permission to shine!
What do you like and dislike about the city?
I love being around so many people from all over the world, learning about different cultures and languages, and meeting new people. Experiencing nightlife and dancing to different kinds of music is such an incredible life experience! I love Miami but driving around the city can be a nightmare!
