Today we’d like to introduce you to King Alexander.
Hi King, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I guess it all started in middle school or so, my art journey. I started drawing characters with my best friend, Max, and it’s been evolving ever since. I went through my changes as anyone else does, y’know? I came out as non-binary sometime in high school, reworked my characters to create something truly original to me, picked up animation, adopted a more punk aesthetic for my main outfit, and stuff like that. Not much stuff happening in my life, but maybe that’s a blessing, haha!
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I mean, I had struggles; who hasn’t? Figuring out what to come out as is its own struggle. There are hundreds of labels, so many choices can be overwhelming on its own, and of course, there’s homophobia and whatnot. Dad was cool with my coming out; Mom wasn’t, but I’m not planning to change people. Don’t like me? Move on mate. For art stuff, though, learning to animate was a hurdle, of course. Funny thing is I kind of hate the tedious nature of making animation haha! I do like the blocking and keying of scenes, though, so I’m shooting for a job in storyboarding. Fingers crossed, of course.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I mostly do character art; designing characters is a favorite of mine. I guess what I’m known for (at least in my little circles) is shape language and how I integrate that into my character designs. I’m always striving to create something I personally have yet to see or do. One thing I’m proud of is probably the fact that I’m still going. Art keeps me thinking, keeps me learning, y’know? I gotta say, though, my main characters I have I’ve designed are definitely my largest crown jewels.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I was the quiet art kid; some things never change! I kept to myself, was in honors for all of grade school, drew a whole lot, etc. Not much to say about my younger self; I was pretty boring. I did take MCJROTC, though, in high school; I think that changed me a lot into who I am today. It built up my confidence, helped my organization skills, VASTLY improved my people skills to the point of being able to lead hundreds of students in school-wide events. To this day, some people still look to me when they need guidance within a team. I’m lucky that people still see me as something to look up to.
