Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Oshiro
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’m a product and set stylist. I started in catering, than I was producing and designing events. From there, I opened my own boutique wedding planning company in 2008. I also launched my blog Santa Barbara Chic at the same time. In 2010, I began making content for my blog as an OG content creator. I featured weekly floral, cocktail, and tabletop ideas. From the blog, I met a small online magazine who hired me to style and produce lifestyle editorials. At the same time, I started to style for brands directly. I did primarily lifestyle set dressing and eventually added product styling as my focus and speciality. I’ve styled every product under the sun at this point from wine to free weights.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Since I never worked for another prop stylist there was definitely a learning curve especially since I started out working with film photographers who obviously weren’t tethered like a product photographer is (meaning the camera is hooked up to a computer so you see the actual shot). I think the hardest styling to learn was jewelry. It’s definitely an exercise in Zen getting those darn chains to look camera-ready. But mostly I just seem to have a knack for figuring out how to make things look so good you want to buy them.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I work on marketing campaigns for a huge variety of brands on both the still and motion side. I offer eight types of styling, product, textures for cosmetics and skincare, set dressing, floral/bridal, beverage, jewelry, and entertaining/tabletops.
I was really excited to work on a celebrity brand launch with photographer and legend Mark Selinge. Definitely a “pinch me” moment, especially when I saw my work on a billboard in times square!
I am somewhat unusual in the fact that I entirely self taught. I also used to do floral for wedding so I can bust out a floral wall if anyone needs it.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
If you don’t take risks you might as well not be alive. If there is a safe choice or an alternative choice; I will take the road less traveled every time (there’s less traffic, lol). I’ve worked for my self since I was 25. So to anyone thinking about starting their own thing, just, well, do it.
