Life & Work with Karina Segura of Lakewood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Karina Segura.

Hi Karina, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I moved to Los Angeles from Honduras 16 years ago with big dreams and determination. At first, I wanted to become a dentist, but life had different plans for me. When I arrived, I didn’t speak English, so I dedicated myself to learning the language while adapting to a new country and culture.

I attended English classes during the day and worked night shifts as a caregiver, since those shifts required less communication with families. It was a challenging time, but it taught me resilience, discipline, and compassion.

Eventually, I enrolled in LVN school while continuing to work. My nursing journey has not been easy, but every obstacle motivated me to keep pushing forward. After graduating as an LVN, I decided to continue my education and pursue my dream of becoming a Registered Nurse.

Today, I’m proud of how far I’ve come and grateful for every experience that shaped me into the nurse and person I am today.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Some of the biggest challenges I faced were learning a new language, adapting to a completely different culture, and balancing work with school. There were times when I felt overwhelmed working night shifts while attending classes during the day, but I knew I had to keep going for my future and my family.

Another challenge was continuing my education while managing financial responsibilities and the pressure of nursing school. There were moments of self-doubt, exhaustion, and fear of failure, especially as an immigrant trying to build a life from the ground up. However, those experiences made me stronger, more disciplined, and more compassionate toward others.

Each obstacle taught me resilience and reminded me why I started this journey in the first place.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Today, I work as a Registered Nurse, and I’m proud of how far I’ve come. My journey has taught me resilience, compassion, and the importance of never giving up on your goals. Being able to care for patients and make a difference in their lives is incredibly rewarding, especially knowing where I started and everything it took to get here.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
One thing people may find surprising is that when I first moved to Los Angeles, I barely spoke English and never imagined I would one day become a Registered Nurse. There were moments when I questioned myself and my abilities, but I kept pushing forward. Looking back now, it’s amazing to see how much determination, sacrifice, and faith can completely change someone’s life.
