Life & Work with Joshua Childress

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joshua Childress. Them and their team share their story with us below:

Joshua Christian Childress is a jazz saxophonist from Los Angeles, California. His musical journey started in the 3rd grade when he first started playing the clarinet. Joshua has lead, performed, and received multiple awards throughout his younger educational years. In high school, Joshua had received the Woody Herman Jazz Award after competing throughout many jazz competitions. He was also the lead clarinet player of the wind ensemble. Joshua has also played in Jazz America hosted by Richard Simon. He has participated in Grammy Saxophonist Bob Mintzer’s master class. Joshua now has received his B.A. Commercial Music Degree. During this time Joshua had received the rewards as one of the top soloists in the 2018 Greeley Jazz Festival at UNC and the award of 1st Place/Top College Saxophonists from the Reno Jazz Festival at UNR. Also, Joshua has received scholarship from the Dolo Coker Jazz Scholarship competition. Joshua has received the honor of playing for Converse, DiscoverLA/LATourism, and Kelly Rowland to name a few. Joshua is not only a profound performer and teacher but a music producer and now producing his own music. You can find Joshua performing throughout Los Angeles and recording in the studio for his own albums and for other people’s albums as well. Joshua is also working towards receiving his MM in Jazz Studies at CSU Long Beach. 

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My music journey has been smooth. There hasn’t been any major challenges along the way. 

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a jazz saxophonist. I specialize in performing, teaching, composing, and arranging. I’m known for being a virtuosic tenor saxophonist and multi-instrumentalist. 

I am proud of being one of the top soloist/saxophonist in the college jazz festivals 3 years in row, this includes me achieving the first-place college saxophonist award in the 2019 Reno jazz festival. I’m also proud of being able to play in the Ellen show with Kelly Rowland. Along with being a part of the Converse commercial. 

What sets me apart is my ability to compose beautiful melodies.
