Life & Work with Jiawei Wu

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jiawei Wu.

Hi Jiawei, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I am an award-winning visual artist and communications designer who was born and raised in China and is now based in New York. When I was a child, I enjoyed adding drawings and graphic images to my diary to express my thoughts and stories. Then I began experimenting with a more complex narrative using multiple media. My undergraduate major in film enhanced my storytelling abilities. In the meantime, I investigated vulnerability in terms of self-alienation. Individual memories and emotions are, for me, a true narrative, a record of unstable and tangible experiences. After completing my undergraduate education, I feel more sensitive to color and graphics, allowing me to convey my ideas with limited resources. Then, I moved to New York to pursue graduate graphic design studies. I enjoy meeting creative individuals and hearing their unique stories and perspectives, which broaden my perspective and provide additional inspiration for my life and career. Currently, I am employed by a design agency and am available for freelance work. I believe I am still on the path to exploring my abilities and profound thoughts through appropriate media. All experiences maintain my motivation and passion.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I would not describe my journey as smooth. It seems like an adventure or an exploratory journey to me. When I was a young visual artist, I believed that attention was the most crucial element and frequently disregarded narrative and logical systems. My work lost its inherent narrative and ability to communicate with the audience as a result of a singular focus on visual appeal. My creative world was closed and egocentric. Then I began to observe and listen to life. I endeavored to collect the stories of others, identify their connections, and incorporate them into my works. Having traveled specifically to New York, I have met so many brilliant individuals and received additional suggestions. When I speak with other artists and designers from various fields, I gain a great deal of inspiration. Their viewpoints will influence me to reevaluate my current perspective, resulting in increased creativity and potential new avenues that I am eager to investigate. I began to gradually alter my method of creation and search for an appropriate way to present my work. Excitingly, I enjoy the exploration process along the way, where I can see unexpected directions.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a communications designer and visual artist at present. I am interested in storytelling. I believe that a good project should have a system that connects everything from beginning to end, as well as additional elements that tell the target audience a story. There is always a narrative behind my projects, and I continue to investigate the possibilities. In addition, I combine my Eastern heritage and Western way of life to create designs that speak to and attract people from all over the world. My audience is influenced by and connected to my artistic work and accomplishments as a graphic design artist because they have been exposed to global experiences and highly talented professionals in the field. I hope that my works will take the audience on a unique journey that they will enjoy.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
Be bold. Be engaged. The creative process is a journey in which each individual learns, matures, and develops his or her own style. It may be boring and repetitive at times, but artists will acquire the critical thinking and professional skills that create a connection with the audience and enable them to discover amazing moments with a logical design system and clear elements.
