Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenny Johnson.
Hi Jenny, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m just a silly gal from Texas who loves making people laugh. I started off as a news producer in Texas and when Twitter became all the rage I decided to start writing jokes in between writing news. Turns out people liked my silly posts and my follower count kept getting bigger and bigger which was pretty dope. I ended up signing with an agent and manager in LA and sold a pilot to ABC. Once that happened I decided to move to LA and give comedy a shot. That was in 2013. While writing constantly, I decided to take an even bigger leap and tell my jokes on stage. I’ve now been a stand up comedian and writer for over 10 years. I’m living a dream I never thought possible for a gal from Bay City, Texas.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Nothing is ever smooth in Hollywood. There’s always a learning curve and I have ran over all those curves. People will tell you how great you are and nothing happens. People will be nice to your face only because they want something from you. People will promise you things and nothing happens. People will trash you behind your back. Hollywood is not a place for people with thin skin. You can’t get your feelings hurt. You gotta have crocodile skin to work in this town. With that said, there is no greater feeling than standing on a stage and making people laugh. There is no greater feeling than writing something that actually gets made. Once you sift through all the bullshit, this is a pretty amazing place to be working. You just can’t get your hopes up… too much. You don’t wanna have zero hope. You just gotta be realistic.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Twitter was my launching pad. I wouldn’t be here without Twitter (I refuse to call it X). When I joined Twitter in 2010 I saw people being themselves. Not just famous comedians, but everyday folks like myself who would not have ever had a chance if it wasn’t for this platform. I learned how to write jokes. There were many swings and misses (MANY), but I learned from my mistakes. I had a somewhat controversial Twitter beef with Chris Brown in 2012. That was my “Scarlet Tweet” if you will. Here I was in Galveston, Texas on the Sunday after Thanksgiving and I replied like a smartass to one of his posts. Let me also add, I am not a fan of someone who abuses women. I replied, put my phone down then the shit hit the fan. He replies back, we go back and forth. Honestly, I was laughing and thinking nothing of it. Then I find out he deleted his Twitter account. I drive back to my house in Houston the next morning. Turn on CNN and walk in the other room to get ready for work and hear, “Comedy writer Jenny Johnson caused Chris Brown to delete his Twitter account.” One of my friends text me and said they were talking about me on The View. Imagine being a unknown person and seeing this on your TV. Surreal isn’t a good enough word for what I was feeling. I had to call my mom to give her a head’s up. She didn’t really process it until people started calling her. It was truly one of the most uncomfortable moments in my life. I would not say it was my finest hour, that’s for sure.
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Going to Matagorda peninsula fishing every year with my dad, my best friend Emily and her dad, Lindsey. We did this trip every year since Emily and I were 5-years old until my dad passed away. I also loved going with my dad to Fort Worth each year to the NASCAR race to watch our favorite driver Terry Labonte race. Yes, I’m a country gal.
