Today we’d like to introduce you to James Turner
Hi James, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started in Washington DC. I’m oldest of four kids and 22 grandchildren. Always felt I was the chosen one. I wrote my first story at eight years old. That moment I wanted to turn my projects into films and plays. I would always walk around with a pen and pad which my friends made fun of me for it. 30 plus years later, I’m now in Los Angeles still carrying around a pen and pad as a reminder of my journey and to always remain humble. I had a lot of self-doubt and many others that doubted me but the few that did hold me down gave me the inspiration to pursue my journey to where it’s at today. I’m definitely blessed and I keeps God first in everything I do.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
This LA journey has been a wonderful struggle. I been in LA for 13 1/2 years. I been homeless at least ten times out here. I had some moments where I was sleeping at the train station and going straight to the rehearsals to work on my production. Trying to balance work, career, exercise, maintaining a love life and now two boys I’m raising. It’s been a long road. I never had a mentor or someone to guide and show me the way but I just trusted in the Lord and my spiritual angels to guide me.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m an established Playwright/Director. Currently in production with my 17th stageplay, ‘Black Dads’ which will be finished by time this article comes out. This will be Father’s Day weekend. I specialize in romantic dramadies. My productions come with 80% original humor and 20% drama which the drama bleeds into real life that it blends in well with the comedy. I’m most proud of being the oldest of 22 grandchildren and a proud black man. I’m proud of this authenticity and transparency as well as my joy for people and life. What sets me apart from others is my revolutionary style of content. Every story I written is original and brings unique concepts and elements to my story. I’m thankful for the gifts God has blessed me with.
What does success mean to you?
Revolutionizing the industry as much as possible without compromising my morals and integrity. My productions are life changing to the point that my projects have lifelong lessons that folks take with them everyday. I’m here to empowered the black community and help break the psychological barriers that have been programmed into our community for centuries. I really want to put folks who work with me and believe in me into position to actually win and gain success. When I see former actors I’ve directed in one of my productions doing their thing, especially on television/film, I enjoy the feeling of knowing the fruits of my labor has added value to these folks lives. God has a purpose in me to continue to break the negative stereotypes of black folks and to break down the doors while silently creating epic productions that will change the industry forever. That’s if they’re ready to allow the realest and most talented brother in LA to make his mark on this industry and the world. God has amazing things destined for me. I just have to deliver.
