Today we’d like to introduce you to Hundo.
Hi Hundo, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was at a low point in my life. I quit my ministry job, left a relationship where I thought she was the one (she wasn’t) and was looking for purpose. One of my OG’s told me I was sitting on the sidelines and needed to get involved. The environment I was in was somewhat like a pyramid scheme, where the guy at the top got all the shine. It was then that I got this mantra downloaded to me: Everybody cooks, everybody eats. That’s when I started my creative collective, the Potluck.
We started out making content and throwing shows in the San Fernando Valley (Free Lunch 1 & 2 were classics) which helped make a buzz. Songs like “What You Wanna Do?” started to take off and I eventually caught the attention of Sprite, which marked a new level for me. It really made me feel like “damn, I’m built for this. I’m good at this. Really good.” Catching flights to Atlanta for work and rocking stages started to become the norm. We came a long way from the guest house on Itasca St.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
To be honest, I’m not that guy who has a ton of “haters” and “doubters.” I was someone that people kind of expected big things from. Living up to those expectations was always my struggle. Finding a place where I fit in. I wasn’t a great student, even though I was smart. And my day jobs were always challenging. But the support I had from my family helped carry me through. And the knowledge that I didn’t choose this. I’ve lived in 5 states and landed in Southern California by an act of God…so I’ve always felt chosen. If I was out here making songs about my genitals or something, maybe I’d feel less secure (lol)…but this has always felt like God’s plan. So even the depression and self-doubt was temporary.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m an independent recording artist and also a small business owner. I handle everything from merchandise, publishing administration, event planning, production, and even cooking meals for my team. They say I make a mean chicken sandwich.
I’m best known for my song, “What You Wanna Do?” but I have a feeling that this next album is going to be big. Really big.
I’m proud of my team of creatives that I’ve mentored. They’ve gone on to work for Columbia Records, the New York Knicks and get hundreds of thousands of streams on their own. I guess you could say I’m good at looking at the bigger picture and helping others pursue their purpose with passion.
What’s next?
Over the past year or so, I’ve been expanding with my sound and the kind of content I make. I have a film and album called “But the Flesh is Weak.”…both dropping on September 2nd. Just started my first film festival circuit and had a premiere at the TCL Chinese Theater…which is like a dream. I’m really excited to share this art with the world. The stuff I have coming is going to blow minds.
