Life & Work with DJ WZRD of Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to DJ WZRD.

Hi DJ WZRD, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey with music started from simply being drawn to the energy that music creates. I’ve always loved the way a DJ can completely change the atmosphere of a room and bring people from different backgrounds together through one experience.

I started DJing and over time began experimenting with different sounds and styles, eventually finding my own lane by combining Latin music with electronic music. Reggaeton, dembow, guaracha, baile funk, and high-energy EDM all became part of the sound I wanted to create. For me, it wasn’t about fitting into one genre, it was about creating an experience that felt energetic, authentic, and uniquely mine.

I built DJ WZRD independently, developing the brand, music, visuals, and career from the ground up. There have definitely been ups and downs along the way, but every show, release, connection, and setback has helped shape where I am today. I’ve had the opportunity to perform in different cities across the U.S., work with artists and promoters, and experience moments like reaching 100K monthly Spotify listeners and performing for sold-out crowds.

One of the things I’m most proud of is being able to take a sound that comes from Latin club culture and bring it into electronic spaces and bigger stages. I’ve seen firsthand how people respond when you combine those worlds, and it’s pushed me to keep developing that sound rather than following what everyone else is doing.

Today, I’m based in Los Angeles and focused on growing WZRD into something much bigger than just a DJ name. I’m continuing to release music, collaborate with artists, play shows across the country, and work toward festivals and international stages.

There’s still a lot I want to accomplish, but I’m proud that I’ve been able to build this independently and stay true to the vision. For me, the goal has always been simple: create high-energy experiences, make people feel something, and keep pushing the culture forward through music.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Building a career in music independently comes with a lot of uncertainty, and there have been plenty of moments where I’ve had to question whether things were moving fast enough.

One of the biggest challenges has been learning how to build a career beyond just being a DJ. You’re not only responsible for the music, you’re building a brand, creating content, networking, negotiating bookings, managing releases, developing relationships, and constantly figuring out how to keep people engaged. There’s a lot that happens behind the scenes that people never see.

I’ve also experienced setbacks with music distribution, releases, and the business side of the industry. At one point, I had built my Spotify audience to around 100K monthly listeners, and after issues surrounding my distribution, I had to start rebuilding that momentum. That was frustrating, but it also taught me that you can’t let one setback define your career.

Another challenge has been staying true to my sound while figuring out where it fits in the industry. I’ve always wanted to blend Latin music and electronic music in a way that feels natural rather than forcing myself into one category. Sometimes taking your own path means it takes longer for people to understand exactly what you’re building.

The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that consistency matters more than any single moment. There are going to be great shows, slow periods, opportunities that don’t work out, and doors that take longer to open. I’ve learned to keep creating, keep performing, keep building relationships, and keep improving even when there isn’t an immediate reward.

Looking back, a lot of the obstacles that felt like setbacks at the time ended up making me more independent and more focused. They’ve made me realize that building a lasting career is a marathon, not a single breakthrough.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a DJ, producer, and creative behind DJ WZRD. My work sits at the intersection of Latin music, electronic music, and high-energy club culture. I specialize in creating sets and music that blend sounds like reggaeton, dembow, guaracha, baile funk, and EDM into an experience that feels energetic and unexpected.

What I’ve become known for is bringing a lot of energy into every room I play. I’m not interested in simply playing songs back-to-back, I want the set to feel like an experience. I’m constantly paying attention to the crowd, building momentum, and finding ways to connect different sounds and cultures together.

A big part of my work is also developing my own music. I’ve been releasing and producing records that explore the space between Latin club music and electronic music, and I’m continuing to push that sound into bigger stages and different markets. I want people to hear a WZRD record or see a WZRD performance and immediately understand the energy behind it.

I’m especially proud of what I’ve been able to build independently. I’ve performed in different cities across the country, played sold-out events, reached 100K monthly Spotify listeners, and continued growing my audience without having a major machine behind me. Every step has come from developing the brand, creating consistently, building relationships, and putting myself in rooms where opportunities can happen.

What sets me apart is that I’m not trying to choose between Latin music and electronic music. I see them as two worlds that can work together naturally. Latin club culture has so much energy, rhythm, and identity, while electronic music gives me the freedom to experiment with production, sound design, and bigger environments. WZRD is my way of bringing those worlds together.

Ultimately, I want WZRD to be bigger than just being a DJ name. I’m building a recognizable sound, visual identity, and experience that can exist in clubs, festivals, and international stages. I’m still building it, but that process is what I’m most excited about.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Something that might surprise people is how much of WZRD actually happens outside of the DJ booth. People see the performances, the music, the visuals, and the energy, but I’m very hands-on with almost every part of the brand.

I’m involved in the music, the creative direction, the visuals, the content, the branding, and even a lot of the business decisions behind the scenes. A lot of the things people see on my social media started as ideas that I developed myself before bringing in other creatives to help take them to the next level.

I think another thing people might not expect is that I’m constantly studying music and culture. Even when I’m not working on a show or producing a record, I’m listening to different genres, watching what’s happening in different cities, and looking for sounds or ideas that I can reinterpret in my own way.

At the end of the day, DJing is only one part of what I’m building. WZRD is really an entire creative world, and I’m still discovering what that can become.
