Life & Work with David Lee

Today we’d like to introduce you to David Lee.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’m a 17-year-old singer, songwriter, producer, and musician from Los Angeles, California. I started playing guitar at the age of four and quickly developed a deep passion for music. I drew inspiration from legendary artists such as Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson and knew that music was my calling. Over time, I became a multi-instrumentalist, constantly striving to perfect my skills on the piano, guitar, bass, drums, and ukulele.

I’ve been fortunate enough to perform at several renowned venues, including the Whisky a GoGo in Hollywood, House of Blues Anaheim, and The Viper Room, as well as the National Association of Music Merchants Show (NAMM). Since 2019, I’ve been pursuing my solo career as a singer-songwriter, writing and producing my own original music. I’m proud to have released my debut album, “Before It’s Too Late,” last year, which has garnered over 85K streams to date. I joined a boyband this year called “Bout’ Last Night.”

In addition to my musical pursuits, I’ve also been building my social media presence. My handles (known as musicbydavidlee) have grown significantly, with over 90,000 followers on TikTok and 50,000 on Instagram. I’m grateful for the support I’ve received along the way from my FAMLEE and excited to continue pursuing my passion for music.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I have encountered both triumphs and obstacles in the music industry. While performing live shows and connecting with fans is my dream, I have also experienced disappointments such as toxic relationships with former band members and unfulfilled promises from professionals. These challenges have taught me valuable life lessons, including the importance of surrounding myself with supportive and like-minded individuals.

My current goal is to expand my reach and build a larger following. This journey has required me to sacrifice social events and friendships to fully dedicate myself to my craft.

One of my most significant challenges has been learning how to effectively promote my music across multiple platforms. The music industry can be unpredictable, but I believe that the highs and lows are what make it an exciting and rewarding field to pursue.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
As a musician, I specialize in creating music that reflects my passion and love for the art. I’m most proud of how far I’ve come as a person and a musician. It has taken me a long time to get to where I am today. It all began when I was around 4 to 5 years old, constantly playing the guitar until my fingers bled.

Fast forward 10 years, and it was 2020, a year that brought a lot of changes for me. Before 2020, I was constantly performing shows, but once the pandemic hit, everything came to a halt. That break gave me the chance to reflect on everything I had done and helped me find my purpose again. After such a long time of performing and practicing, I had started to feel exhausted. So, in April 2020, I decided to learn how to fully produce my own music, something I had always been interested in.

My love for producing was always relevant. Around 11 or 12 years old, I would create beats on my iPad using Garageband and write songs. It was something I was so deeply interested but never got to pursue. During the entire pandemic, I was working solely on music, to the point where I stopped talking to my friends. I would wake up, eat food, be in my studio, then go to sleep. Looking back, it was somewhat depressing, but that year was pivotal in shaping my music.

My work ethic is something that sets me apart from others. Even for me, it’s sometimes crazy to think that I still have the same passion and love for music that I had as a little kid. My biggest goal is to become one of the greatest artists in the world, and I’m thankful for my team, FAMLEE, and all of the fans who have supported me throughout the years. I won’t stop working until I reach my goal, and until then, I will keep striving to be the best I can be.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
It’s important to seek out opportunities to connect with other musicians and industry professionals. Attend local music events, open mic nights, and workshops to meet other musicians and get your name out there. Social media can also be a powerful tool for networking and reaching new audiences.

When it comes to finding a mentor, it’s important to approach people who you respect in the industry. You can reach out to them directly, whether it’s through social media or email, and express your interest in learning from them.

Ultimately, building a network in the music industry takes time and effort, but it can be incredibly rewarding. Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way. I one day want to be a mentor for people like me now. I want to build my career so that one day I can help independent artists have a voice and help talent in the generation to follow.
