Today we’d like to introduce you to Christina Romo
Hi Christina, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My name is Christina Romo. I grew up in Palm Springs, CA. Music has always been apart of my life and I can’t remember a time without it. It started when I was put on a drum set at 2 years old to play on my cousins set while they were playing a house party and loved it so much my parents got me my own set the next year. Little did I know it would be the start of everything.
I started writing songs on drums at 7 years old after discovering the album “Fearless” and realized I had a place to put my feelings and that people actually listened to them when I would put them into a song. I played drums up until 7th grade when the music teacher told me I needed to learn another instrument due to there being too many drummers in the class. I immediately went on YouTube and learned guitar in 2 weeks, from there I learned bass, ukulele, and piano. As I entered high school and went through more intense experiences, I wrote more and more music to help heal what I was going through, from trying to understand my sexuality to dealing with accepting my parents divorce. Going into college I made it a goal everyone would know this is what I was here to do and the message was sent.
I moved to LA in 2022 to fully pursue my career and dropped my three songs within a year of me establishing myself. I found my bandmates from Open Mic nights at The Oaks Tavern and JamNation which is an improv music group for musicians. Once we met, we clicked immediately and that’s what makes performing with them so fun. It’s been so awesome seeing my songs come to life from them starting off as sad songs I’d write in my bed. My music is described as lyrics like Taylor swift with production like paramore/ Green Day. I’m so excited to see what’s gonna happen next.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it’s been a rollercoaster of a journey to finally be able to perform not only my songs on stage but also just releasing them out into the world. My first single along with so many other songs were supposed come out in 2019 and unfortunately due to producers only caring about themselves, they left me out of the entire creative process and wouldn’t let me change anything. My first collaboration “Lies” was released in 2021 with my childhood friend Zeon that I have known since I was 10. We made a music video with it also and it was such a fun way to enter the music industry with someone I genuinely love and know that he feels the same way towards me. I produced my first two songs (besides Bittersweet I bought the beat of YouTube) and haven’t found someone to help push me further until February 2024 when I met my now producer and drummer, Henry Parizek who came into my life and on the first day said “I really want to work with you and produce some of the songs I’ve been hearing.” I looked at him and said “why do I have a feeling you’re gonna change my life.” Now we’ve been doing shows and following the dream. Next step is to record my EP.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m so proud of myself for continuing to keep going. I moved out to LA with no idea how I was going to live here two weeks before I came out I found a spot just before I got here. I wanted a band so bad and all it took was for me to network for a year to do so. I pushed myself past my comfort zones after leaving such an intense relationship and decided to wholeheartedly focus on myself and my career. I had a goal in January of wanting 5 shows this year for my band and I to play. August 13 will be our 3rd show of the year and we’ve almost hit the goal.
I’ve genuinely had this dream since I was a kid and always wanted my words to be heard. My lyrics are meant to be felt and understood and each show shows me how that message is getting across.
What are your plans for the future?
I am really excited for the future as I don’t know what it holds and what is to come next. I definitely want to try to release my EP this year to have a good stack of my music out to take with me to tour and perform more. Next year I’d love to open for someone to play in one of LA’’s bigger venues. We want to play everywhere.
