Life & Work with Cat Doss of Downtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cat Doss.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I began doing art as a young girl, growing up in Applachia.. I studied painting in college, but ultimately ended up majoring in Psychology. I believe that the two disciplines have a lot of overlap. I moved to Los Angeles in my early twenties and worked on movie sets, doing art, and teaching yoga on the side. I participated in art walks, art shows, and community events around LA as well as Orange County. Painting was always the thing that kept me grounded. It was my outlet, my calm, and my chaos. When I am painting, I am able to reach a creative flow state. Time stops, and it becomes just me, the paint, and the canvas. When I create art, I do it with the viewer in mind. I feel like art is a form of communication. I believe that the artist and the viewer have a collaborative relationship when it comes to finding meaning in a piece of work. I hope to inspire others with my work to find a way to express themselves creatively because we all have our own unique perspective and experience to bring to the conversation.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I think that everyone has their struggles. Art has always been an anchor for me. No matter what was going on in my life, I could pick up some paint and make something beautiful, In my twenties, I was definitely on a journey to find myself. I struggled with my identity, but art was a constant. It’s always been there for me, and that is why I believe it is so important to have a creative outlet, and that can be so many things to so many people.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I love to paint. I have a daily mindfulness practice, and I believe that that informs my work heavily. As an artist and as a woman, I believe that my work has that perspective. One of my favorite things to do as an artist is to meet other creatives and to learn about their experiences and to have that sort of exchange with the community. I believe that each of us is set apart because we are all unique, and no one is replaceable. We all have something we can bring to the lexicon.

How do you define success?
Success for me is to be able to make an impact on others. Art is ultimately a form of communication. There is an exchange between the artist and the viewer. Showing my work is extremely rewarding because I love to interact with my community and get to know other creatives. If I am able to make someone think or give someone a moment where I am able to help them in some way, then I feel successful.
