Today we’d like to introduce you to Beyondsonny.
Hi Beyondsonny, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve been making music since high school and started recording in professional studios around the age of 14. Growing up in Brooklyn with Caribbean influences around me, music became a way to express vulnerability, ambition, and self-awareness from an early age. I was heavily inspired by artists like Kanye West, Kid Cudi, J. Cole, and Kendrick Lamar — artists who balanced storytelling, emotion, and experimentation in a way that deeply resonated with me.
In the early days, I released music independently through platforms like DatPiff and SoundCloud, during a time when the focus wasn’t on algorithms, analytics, or virality. The goal was simply to create honestly and share my music with anyone willing to listen. That freedom allowed me to develop my sound organically while building a dedicated audience online.
Throughout college, I continued recording and releasing music, eventually dropping projects like Reaching Heaven Vol. 1 and American Hippy Demo, which helped shape the foundation of my artistic identity. After graduating, I decided to fully commit to music and creative direction as a long-term path. Around that time, I began collaborating with the production team at Matria, where we focused on creating cinematic visuals and narrative-driven music videos that brought a high level of artistry and production quality to the Hip Hop landscape. Those collaborations helped establish the visual world surrounding my music and expanded my work into film, fashion, and creative production.
Today, under the name Beyondsonny, I continue to evolve as an artist, blending introspective lyricism with experimental production and strong visual storytelling. I am currently in the process of rolling out my debut album SWANS (Sometimes We All Need Space) — a deeply personal project that explores themes of identity, vulnerability, ambition, isolation, love, and self-reflection while pushing my sound into new territory.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
There have been plenty of challenges along the way, with the biggest sacrifices being time, money, and consistency. Pursuing music independently requires constant investment, not only into recording, visuals, marketing, and creative development, but also into maintaining everyday responsibilities like rent, bills, and work. Balancing artistry with real life can be demanding, especially when the creative process itself already asks for so much emotionally and mentally.
Like many artists, I’ve also had to navigate the pressure of public reception and streaming numbers. In today’s landscape, it’s easy to become overly aware of analytics, engagement, and how music is performing online. At times, it can make you question how you should release your work, how often you should create, or even whether your voice can truly cut through such a saturated space. But despite those doubts, I’ve continued to make music because creating has always been bigger than numbers for me; it’s about expression, storytelling, and building something honest that people can genuinely connect with.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a Brooklyn-based artist, songwriter, creative director, and visual storyteller creating under the name Beyondsonny. My work exists at the intersection of music, film, fashion, and culture, with a strong focus on honest storytelling and cinematic world-building. I specialize in creating deeply personal music paired with high-quality visuals that feel intentional, emotionally grounded, and reflective of real experiences.
Over the years, I’ve independently built my career from the ground up, from recording music as a teenager and releasing songs on platforms like SoundCloud and DatPiff, to developing full visual campaigns and conceptual music videos alongside the production team at Matria. My work often blends introspective lyricism with experimental production, Caribbean influence, New York culture, and strong visual identity. Whether through music videos, photography, or live creative concepts, I always aim to make projects feel immersive and authentic.
What I’m most proud of is my consistency and willingness to evolve while remaining true to myself creatively. I’ve continued creating through uncertainty, financial sacrifice, changing platforms, and an industry that can often prioritize trends over individuality. Even with those challenges, I’ve stayed committed to building a body of work that reflects who I am, honestly, rather than chasing what feels temporary.
I think what sets me apart is the balance between vulnerability and vision. My music isn’t just about performance; it’s about reflection, identity, ambition, doubt, confidence, and human experience. I care deeply about the full presentation of my art, from the writing and production to the visual execution and emotional impact. I want people to feel like they’re stepping into a world when they experience a Beyondsonny project, not just listening to a song.
