Life & Work with Aja Mathis of Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Aja Mathis

Hi Aja, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Choking Hazard Kitchen started as a pandemic project in 2020. Like most of us, stuck in our homes during lockdown, I ran out of things to do so I decided to give the recipes I had bookmarked a try. My first lockdown baked good was a loaf of bread. Pretty basic, but crisp on the outside, soft and warm inside. Next, I worked on perfecting my cookies and then went around town, dropping them off to my friends (from a distance and in masks). Soon after receiving so much support and positive feedback, I decided to turn it into a business. Fast forward to today and I now create beautiful custom cakes, I ship many of my baked goods nationwide and I continue to learn my way around some sugar and the oven.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’ve definitely had some struggles over the years. I learned the hard way about the importance of time management, keeping a paper trail and working smarter not harder.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a home baker and content creator, best known for my cookies! My Brown Butta cookies are a big fan favorite, in addition to my cakes, peach cobbler, breads, brownies and infused treats. I’m only 4 years in and I’m very proud of the progress I’ve made. I’ve taught myself everything I know through trial and error, Google and Youtube University. I’m a married, stay at home mother of 2, a toddler and teenager, that somehow seems to manage it all while maintaining my home, being present for my family and friends, drinking enough water and creating delish goods for my customers.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
I want to thank me for doing all this hard work. I want to thank me for believing in me…..It’s been me doing all of the hard work for the most part. But I have to say everything would’ve been much much harder if it wasn’t for the support of my friends and neighbors. They provided the feedback, honest criticism and tastebuds, taste testing all of my goods.
