Today we’d like to introduce you to Adolfo Verdugo.
Hi Adolfo, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
A little over eight years ago, Adolfo and Catalina came together to set a bounch of songs to music and record them with musicians brought together specifically for the occasion. This material is rooted in Latin American folk traditions, while also drawing influence from North American folk music.
Because of our age difference, and therefore our different musical influences and tastes, the resulting blend was so appealing that we decided to continue the experience. To do so, we brought in another young musician, Fabian, whose background is in electronic pop.
This encounter has evolved into an “intergenerational musical dialogue,” bringing together our different perspectives on contemporary Latin American music. For the record : Adolfo is 69 years old, Catalina 38 and Fabian 35
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
To produce and develop our music, we have been blessed with platforms and devices that help us tremendously. Showing our work and getting people to listen to it is much more difficult, though. We live in a small country, and all three of us have several other jobs that allow us to make a living and keep moving forward.
Nevertheless, we have received a warm response. We are recording, composing, and gradually reaching a growing audience. We believe in the work itself, without complaining.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As I mentioned before, the three of us are professional musicians with academic training.
Catalina is a cellist and holds a Master’s degree in Music Education for musicians. She is also a very talented singer.
Fabian is a guitarist and pianist with formal training in music composition. He is also a singer.
And I, Adolfo, am a songwriter and composer, arranger, guitarist, and singer. Most of our material consists of my compositions.
What distinguishes us is our musical expression—a sound that combines our Latin American roots, rhythms, and musical forms with electronic and pop music. This blend has given birth to a distinctive sound, a voice of our own that identifies us.
I believe that is what we are most proud of.
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
In this case, I will answer personally: I have many memories, and almost all of them are related to music. Perhaps this is the most meaningful one.
My parents loved surprises. So, on the night of my fifth birthday, just as I was getting ready for bed, they appeared with a strange-looking package—unusual both in its shape and its size.
I never could have imagined that when I opened it, I would find a guitar inside!
I was completely frozen. All I could do was gently caress it, perhaps afraid that it might suddenly disappear, hahaha…
It wasn’t new, but it had been beautifully restored. It was painted black and red, and it stayed with me until I was able to buy a new one.
