Life and Work with Angela Sauceda

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Sauceda.

Angela, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was born and raised in Los Angeles, I’m a third generation Angeleno. Ever since my grandmother taught me how to sew when I was ten years old, I’ve been attracted to the fashion industry. So much so that I attended FIDM in Downtown LA. Since then, I’ve worked in various creative environments, from working for a fashion retailer to a TV network. On and off throughout that time, I worked as a wardrobe stylist with the cast of LOST, Glee, and Raising Hope. I took a break from fashion and worked for tech and entertainment companies for a few years. But that wasn’t where my heart was. In 2017, I took the leap and quit my job in the entertainment industry to become a full time creative and personal stylist. I couldn’t take that leap alone, I had tremendous support from my friends and family, it was a scary leap of faith, but well worth it to go out on my own.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I was very lucky to have very supportive friends, family, and significant other. In the beginning, it was difficult to figure out and communicate what I really wanted to do. And sometimes, it still is. It’s not very common to quit a well-paying job with benefits to making absolutely no money doing what you love. I definitely struggled with questioning myself. Was this really what I supposed to do?

When I’m in those moments, I ask myself three questions: 1. Am I staying true to my beliefs and values? 2. What does your intuition tell you? 3. Are there outside voices questioning you? Notice that none of these questions have anything to do with money or business.

I ask these not only to center myself and refocus on my mission but to build my intuitive muscle. All I have is my intuition and beliefs. If someone is questioning them, that’s OK, but I have to make sure I listen and trust myself.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I’m a personal stylist and founder of Lost Angeles Style. Lost Angeles Style is a personal styling service focusing on intuitive and inclusive styling. I help people who live in marginalized bodies develop a personal style through their own intuition.

I’m proud to provide a service for a beautiful and underserved community within the fashion industry. I will never turn anyone away due to their size or disability. I pride myself in helping my clients build confidence with their decisions around fashion and styling.

Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well positioned for?
I think a better question is how do we dismantle systems of oppression that do not provide opportunities for womxn and marginalized peoples? A way to do this is to create our own systems and provide equity within our own communities. Working within our own communities to build wealth and opportunities is one way to do this. When your community thrives, you thrive.
