Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Sushanna Jordan of Topanga Canyon

We recently had the chance to connect with Sushanna Jordan and have shared our conversation below.

Sushanna, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
The Journey from Healing to Guiding

Card reading, astrology, and energetic healing are often misunderstood and underestimated. Because these practices work on spiritual and energetic levels, their impact isn’t always visible right away. In a world that values instant, tangible results, it’s easy to dismiss what can’t be seen. But the transformation is very real, just unfolding in more subtle, layered ways.

Unfortunately, the field is also clouded by inauthenticity. Some practitioners operate out of ego or illusion, which leads to confusion and justified skepticism. That’s why it’s so important to find the right guide, someone who speaks your spiritual “language.” Not every healer is for everyone. The connection has to resonate.

I’ve often been the first reader or healer someone has ever worked with. I honor that by meeting people where they are and teaching as I go. I aim to demystify the world of spirituality and symbolism, offering reflections and suggestions, not commands. My clients remain the decision-makers in their lives. My role is to empower, not to dictate.

Some readers make definitive predictions or give people instructions. But I believe in the power of free will. Our actions shape our destiny. We’re not passive recipients of fate, we are co-creators with the universe.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
From Sushanna to Sunshine

My birth name is Sushanna, which many people find difficult to pronounce. At the Tucson Gem Show, while shopping for crystals, a merchant misread my name and called me “Sunshine.” I laughed, corrected him, but told him he could call me that if he liked. The name stuck. As I traveled and met people from around the world, introducing myself as Sunshine brought light to people’s faces. I saw how it made them feel. And so, I embraced it.

The Path Chose Me

I began reading cards at 18, though my curiosity began long before that. I was drawn to astrology and symbolism as a child, intrigued by the stories, archetypes, and patterns. Eventually, I could intuitively sense things about people just from their birthdate, without even needing a chart.

I trained as a personal trainer and later as a yoga teacher, expanding my understanding of healing through the physical body. When the pandemic halted in-person work, I began managing a crystal shop, Topanga Rocks, nestled in the mountains of Topanga, California. I deepened my relationship with crystals and began giving readings in the gazebo by the waterfall. It started as something I loved, something I was good at, and quickly became a calling. Clients began returning, referring others, and affirming that my insights were accurate and life-changing.

What began as a personal passion became a profession.

Now, I’m building a brand: Alchemy of Sunshine. A hub for spiritual guidance, energetic healing, and grounded wisdom. It’s where I merge the unseen with the practical, offering clients tools they can use in everyday life. My mission is to help others transmute their experiences into growth, insight, and embodied soul wisdom.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
Illness Was the Catalyst

I was frequently sick as a child, often in the hospital, often in pain. I had chronic asthma and a recurring ankle injury that made walking difficult. I remember fevers so high I came close to death. These experiences opened a doorway. I began having spiritual experiences I couldn’t explain, glimpses into something deeper, something beyond this world.

Those brushes with the “other side” changed me. They seeded a lifelong curiosity about what lies beneath the surface of our lives. They also taught me how interconnected the mind, body, and spirit truly are.

When I moved out on my own and began my spiritual studies in earnest, my asthma disappeared. My dedication to healing my ankle eventually worked, not through surgery or medication, but through alignment, exercise, consistency, and attention. That conviction, that we are our own greatest healers, now guides my work with others.

What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
My path through illness and injury was the catalyst to my self-understanding journey. I grew up with asthma and had frequent asthma attacks where I struggled to breathe to the point of near death. In addition I had a chronic ankle issue wear I struggled to walk and, just being a child didn’t understand yet the amount of time it took for proper healing.

It wasn’t until I moved out on my own where I had stopped having asthma symptoms. This was in direct correlation with me diving deep into my spiritual studies. My career as a physical trainer was sparked by my conviction that I would figure a way to heal my ankle issues I had struggled with my whole life. I studied different exercises and with consistency and awareness buildt my once problematic symptom into something that has never been an issue since.

These experiences taught me that we are our own greatest healers and with proper guidance and knowledge we can transcend physical ailments as well as create a vibrant and healthy mental and emotional state for ourselves through application. I’ve been teaching others ever since.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
Truth Over Trend

There’s a shadow side to the spiritual industry. In some spaces, there’s more focus on image than integrity. “Healers” elevate themselves above others, feeding the illusion of guru status. It becomes about performance, not presence.

But true healing doesn’t require hierarchy. A good teacher or guide doesn’t speak over you, they listen to you. They walk beside you. They don’t manipulate or coerce; they empower you to trust your own inner knowing.

Engaging with a spiritual mentor is a sacred relationship, and discernment is essential. Ask yourself: Do I feel clearer, lighter, and more grounded after working with them? If not, it might be time to walk away.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
Depth Is My Language

I’m most at home in deep waters, not the ocean kind, but the symbolic depths of the human experience. I guide people beneath the surface, into the subconscious, into the root of their patterns, their wounds, their purpose.

We’re all searching for meaning. I believe that understanding life’s elemental and energetic building blocks, from the cycles of nature to the motion of the stars, can help us remember who we really are.

To me, this is the real alchemy: transforming the chaos of life into gold, insight, and self-realization. That’s the heart of Alchemy of Sunshine.
