Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with J Wealth of Los Angeles

We recently had the chance to connect with J Wealth and have shared our conversation below.

Hi J, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What are you most proud of building — that nobody sees?
The thing I am most proud of building is my career as a music producer. As a kid I was always drawn into the production in music and the first thing I would do when purchasing music is look at the music credits to see the production on the album. Seeing big names like Dr Dre, DJ Quik, Timbaland or other names in the industry would always build the anticipation of listening to the album. As a producer myself I focus on creating cinematic and timeless music where the production draws you into the song while the artists is painting a picture with their word play and story telling.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is J-Wealth and I am a Music Producer and DJ with a background in radio. If I had to describe myself to someone that was researching me for the first time I would say that I’m a grinder and what I mean by that is I will work as hard as I can to accomplish any goals that I set for myself. In 2015 I started a clothing Brand “Wealthy Lifestyle Clothing” which the goal was to create affordable clothes that not only had a good price point but also made people proud to wear. While building my brand I would reach out to some of the creators of the known brands with the hopes of picking their brains on how they built their brand and would get no response. So I went to the drawing board and developed a radio show where it gave me the outlet to interview these brand owners and ask them all of the questions I had to give me more direction with my brand. Over time that plan changed and I found myself in Hollywood, California as a on air DJ and Host on Litt Live formerly known as Dash Radio and the rest was history.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
I would honestly say my relationship with my family. Coming up I got to see first hand how you treat the people you love and honor and respect them from my aunts and uncles. The values they gave me was to always try your best and be true to yourself and don’t be a poser because that would be disrespecting everything that our family stood for so my Mom, Aunts Nenet & Ann and my uncles Michael & Dion and my stepdad Billie all put the values in me that have given me all the motivation I needed to be goal driven and also a goal accomplisher.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering makes you dig deep and really makes you push yourself to get out of any struggle and pain that you may be facing. One quote I like is “The struggle is part of the story” and when we are in our struggles we ultimately do not know this is part of our life story that defines us because in order to come out of that struggle you have to develop belief in yourself that things will get better and sometimes our own struggles we overcome can also be motivation to the people that are close to us dealing with their own struggles. So struggle has taught me that whatever I’m tested with if I can overcome it I will only be stronger and that’s something that success can never give you.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
I would say they would say that I take a lot of pride in being authentic and what you see in me that I show the world is what really represents me and what I stand for, and that is what is most important to me is knowing when I look in the mirror I can look with pride cause I have never presented DJ J-Wealth the artist as a fraud or a phony. So my close friends would say being authentic is what matters to me most.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
That I never gave up because giving up was never an option and when I didn’t feel I was getting the support from my peers I never let that define me or my goals I just stayed true to myself and continued to focus on the goals that I was trying to accomplish. The ones that have supported know who they are and the ones that haven’t will either catch on when it’s too late and in the end that would be a loss for them because what I have created is genuinely good music and good content not defined by numbers.
