We recently had the chance to connect with David Je’ and have shared our conversation below.
David , really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
The first 90 minutes of my day are very pivotal because this is when I center myself and set the tone for the day. The first thing I do every morning I am blessed to open my eyes is say thank You God, pray, and read a daily scripture from my bible app. Then I read my personal I am statements, goals, and business strategies in my notes. After this, I get out of bed, brush my teeth and head downstairs to make some morning tea. I watch a morning word from one of multiple pastors I like while I drink my tea. After I finish my tea and my morning word, I turn on some positive affirmations and say them out loud while I wash the dishes. By this time, it has been just about 90 minutes and I’m ready to do my morning workout which I do six times a week. I called this my ‘Prolific Papi Morning Routine’. It is the routine that keeps me in optimal health mentally, spiritually, physically, and emotionally. I highly recommend it to anyone who’s about that life.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is David Je’ and I’m the Dream Walker. I am a Grammy Nominated and Billboard Charting producer, film composer, singer, songwriter, recording engineer, and vocal coach from Newark, New Jersey. I am also a voting member of the Grammy Recording Academy LA chapter. I’m the owner of Dream Walker Entertainment LLC, which is my media production company that produces music for artists, scores music for films, produces films, and develops independent artists. Aside from the accolades artist development is something I’m very passionate about and I feel blessed to be able to help artists walk in the fullness of their gift.
I also own a clothing line called the Dream Walker Clothing. I call it ‘the fly comfy clothing for the dreamer where it’s okay to be human’. My newest creation is an amazing tool for content creators, independent filmmakers, and commercial agencies, which is called the ‘Content Creator Cinematic Sound Packs’. The ‘CCC Sound Packs’ are 5 packs (Action, Comedy, Drama, Horror, Relax) of original composition film scoring that can be used royalty-free by content creators for all content. Each pack has 6 to 12 original ‘sounds’ that can be easily used in any editing program to make your content sound more like a movie. Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
There are two people who saw me clearly before I ever saw myself. Those two people who I love dearly to this day, and call them my big brothers are Vertical Jones and DK Davall. They are the first people in my whole life to ever tell me I was great. I met them when I was a teenager at a time when being a basketball player was all I thought I was. They were then and still are now two of the most gifted people I’ve ever met in my life.
Vertical Jones is a top-tier music producer, hip-hop artist, creative director, and plays multiple instruments. DK Davall is an award-winning filmmaker, creative director, artist, and also plays multiple instruments. Back then I would sit in the studio with them for hours, soaking up and learning what it actually meant to use your gifts. I attended as many music video shoots, live performances and events that I could to be around that energy. When they heard what I can do as a singer, songwriter, and vocal arranger they told me that I was not just good at these things, but that I was gifted and had the capacity to be great.
This changed my life because prior to this while my family believed and supported me as a basketball player and scholar, no one had ever told me I was great or even had the capacity to be. There is no David Je’ now without my big brothers Vertical Jones and DK Davall believing in me before I did. Seeing Michael Jackson live at six years old may have sparked my creative dreams and gave me something to aspire to, but it was DK Davall and Vertical Jones, who believed in me and gave me tools to actually walk in those dreams. I am forever grateful for both of them.
When you were sad or scared as a child, what helped?
When I was sad or scared as a child, which unfortunately was often, Marvel comics, video games, music, and physical activity are what saved me. I now know that this was the spark and foundation of the creator I am today, and that God was simply molding me into the man I am now. I didn’t just watch the Marvel cartoons, collect the cards and comic books, I actually created and drew my own comic book characters. Losing myself in this world made me feel like I was a superhero. I still love Marvel to this day and when you come to my recording studio or walk around my house, it is very easy to tell.
Playing video games wasn’t just about the games but about problem-solving, and being a winner at times when I felt like it wasn’t possible in any other place in life. Physical activity gave me a place to focus and take out my anger. Before basketball, this was in karate, tae kwon do, gymnastics, and swimming.
Music gave me a way to regulate my emotions and give my spirit peace. But similar to with comic books I didn’t just listen to songs. I would always sing and adlib my own parts to other people songs. So I was literally creating before I even knew what it meant. As I said earlier, I know now that this was simply God guiding me through the things I needed to become who I am today.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
I’m committed to the belief that the phrase ‘Dreams2Reality’ is real. It’s why I named my company Dream Walker Entertainment because it’s not just what I do, but who I am. I believe God gave me my gifts to be an example for other gifted people, and also to help those gifted people use their gifts to the fullest. Like Professor X in X-Men uses his powers or gifts to help other gifted people and the world, I believe I’m here to do the same. ‘I gotta change the world for the youth through my tunes’ is a phrase I’ve been saying since I was a teenager, and with my company Dream Walker Entertainment I’m going to do that as long as God blesses me with breath in my body.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I believe I am 100% doing what I was born to do. I believe God gave me the multitude of musical gifts He did because music is the universal language. Music will allow me to connect to the world and vice versa in a way where a difference in language will not disrupt a connection in energy and feeling. Once we are connected through music, you will then listen to my message, which is love, light, overcoming, and Dreams2Reality.
This is why in the last few years I have been more serious and consistent than ever at using any outlet I can to not just put out music, but give the world a message. My last 6 songs releases (Legacy, DaviD, Human, Unstoppable, Shoulders, Let It Go) are all examples of me pouring my soul out in record format. These songs take you on the journey of how I became this David, show you ‘it’s okay to be Human’, and that you are in fact Unstoppable when you grow and learn to let go of everything and everyone that is holding you back.
I was born to be and do this, and as long as I’m breathing I will keep walking in my dreams for legacy.
