Lianne La Reine of Palos Verdes on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Lianne La Reine. Check out our conversation below.

Lianne, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: Who are you learning from right now?
I am always learning. I learn from the fascinating and creative people that we cover in Palos Verdes Pulse (www.palosverdespulse.com) as well as the captivating speakers at my monthly lecture series.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Lianne La Reine and I co-founded a digital lifestyle magazine called Palos Verdes Pulse that has become the most read publication on the peninsula. We focus on interesting, entertaining, informative, beautiful and original stories and subjects that we want to share with others, so that they can enjoy them like we do. Ultimately, it will become a time capsule for our community.

I also have produced over 400 live lectures with unique speakers and subjects for over 10 years. In addition, I have been serving on the board of the Palos Verdes Historical Society in an effort to preserve the history and rally others to become appreciative and involved as well.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who taught you the most about work?
My first formal work experience was at Marineland of the Pacific, which is now the site of Terranea resort. I was 16 and my supervisor was a 20 year old college student- so sophisticated! It was my first experience having to punch in, punch out, dress in a uniform, be professional and reliable, and I loved it far more than having to go to school.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering teaches you what really matters in life versus what you may have thought before you learned the hard way. For example, I think everyone needs to have a crummy job or bad boss to be able to appreciate it when they get a good one.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes, I am very “what you see is what you get.” Among the schools that I went to, I graduated from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising and my time there reinforced my a love of all things beautiful. You typically won’t catch me in public wearing something I don’t think is cute. The aesthetics of our magazine is very important, because aesthetics in general are important to me personally.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people ultimately remember me as a servant to the community, a storyteller and a preservationist. I hope Palos Verdes Pulse magazine and Lectures with Lianne videos (https://www.youtube.com/@lectureswithlianne) serve in the future as a historical reference so that this time on this planet is immortalized.
