We recently had the chance to connect with Lawless One and have shared our conversation below.
Lawless, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What are you chasing, and what would happen if you stopped?
I’ve spent my whole life taking risks to follow my dreams. I’m an artist who would rather leave an impact and inspire people’s lives instead of chasing after fame. I want to create original sounding music that motivates others, the same way I was influenced by music at a young age. I see my journey is a path blessed from God and my goal here is to complete my mission. If I stopped and gave up, my life would’ve been very different. I wouldn’t have met some of my good friends or have some of the memories that I now have. If I don’t work on music or chase my goals, then I wouldn’t be able to rest or find peace.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m an LA artist named “Lawless One”. This year I’ve released 4 albums each experimenting with different sounds, production, and aesthetic in underground hip-hop/rap. I design my own merch and mix vocals so everything you see and hear will always have a personal touch from myself. I plan on pushing my sound even further next year. I’ll be performing at local shows and out of state.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
When I realized how much my actions can impact others. Realizing I can make someone jump around or start crying with just my words. This is how I began to see music, having the same power as it could comfort and companion me. I built a deep connection with music this way using it to express myself. Understanding the power that music carries kept me tied to it throughout my entire life.
When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
The moment I realized nobody was coming to help or understand. That’s when I decided that I would be the one to push myself the most. I became a person I wanted to love and cheer for once I stopped caring about what other people think. In 2019 my first demo tape was released after writing lyrics throughout high school, since then I have started using music and songwriting to express and use my pain as power.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
When I meet new people, they’re usually surprised that I’m nice and open minded. At first, I struggled with opening up and I got used to keeping to myself, so nobody knew how I was really moving. My music carries a personal touch of my humor, personality, and experiences so that listeners can always get the real version of me.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What do you think people will most misunderstand about your legacy?
People might misunderstand my image and the passion I carry as an artist. They might miss the personal journey in my music on changing the soul, of intending to turn something chaotic and misunderstood to create good for others. They might just assume that I had the same goal.
