Kateri, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Something I enjoy every week is attending The Bar Method classes. I am so glad I found these classes to incorporate into my routine! It keeps me grounded, challenges me and makes me very happy. The community of women are unbelievable and incredibly supportive. My core got stronger, I lost some weight and gained muscle in a few areas! It also helps me be mentally strong.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Kateri Wozny and I live in Pasadena, CA. I have a bachelor’s in Journalism and a master’s in Organizational Communication. I have been an award-winning media professional for more than 20 years and some topics I have covered include wildfires throughout California, the recent ICE Raids, business and human interest features. I also post certain news stories or fun activities to do around the Pasadena/San Gabriel Valley area on my Instagram page, @kitkatwozny, and my TikTok page, @kitkatw0706.
I also have a background in liquor event management in on and off premise events, specifically California wine. I started pouring California wine 8 years ago and I have a passion for how the wine is made. I enjoy how fruit forward California wine tastes and the story behind every bottle. I obtained my California Wine Appellation Specialist certification with Honors from the San Francisco Wine School to learn more about the language of California wine labeling, the history of the American Viticultural Areas and wine production.
I recently launched my Instagram/TikTok channel, @socaluncorked, that highlights different wineries throughout Southern California and when I travel. Certain aspects in the wine industry has been facing many challenges since the pandemic with rising costs, different consumer beverage preferences (e.g., non-alcoholic drinks, ready-to-drink cocktails, craft beer and spirits) and a surplus of grapes. I make content to share not just the wine being offered at these wineries but the history behind it.
I am hoping to have viewers grow an even bigger appreciation for the California wine industry. The engagement amongst the wine community and others has been incredible so far!
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who taught you the most about work?
I believe that every job and person has taught me the importance of teamwork, collaboration, communication, time management and problem-solving. These are important skills that everyone should carry throughout life in order to be successful.
I also learned a lot from my father as he owned his own business. He taught me how to negotiate more effectively and navigate challenges.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I would tell myself that it is all going to work out and play in your favor. Don’t give up, push through and have resilience! There are going to be struggles along the way but there is always something better that comes along.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
If you watch my personal Instagram page, @kitkatwozny, I share my every day life on my stories. I do not hold back and I try to keep it real as I can. My viewers see my highs and lows and every side of my personality, from joy and anger to excitement and sadness.
For @socaluncorked, I always make sure my personality comes out, especially in the voiceovers. If I get shots of myself, I come across as fun, silly and happy – sometimes serious. I think the key is to be yourself – I don’t get these shots of me in a flowing dress or anything like that. I’m usually in a hat, hair up or jeans, tank top and sneakers!
The public also energizes me and encourages me to make content, I always want them to feel engaged and heard!
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: When do you feel most at peace?
When I am in nature. Whether that be a hike or just sitting in the sand, it’s a time for me to take in the scenery and just relax! I also love visiting National Parks and just being a part of what makes them so beautiful!
My creative brain is always going, so sometimes it’s just go to reset your nervous system and just chill!
