Today we’d like to introduce you to Willie Rhine.
Hi Willie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My story really begins with adversity. I grew up in a difficult environment, left school early after being bullied and gay‑bashed, and went to work young, which forced me to grow up fast and taught me the value of hard work and showing up for people. Those early experiences, as painful as they were, shaped my resilience and the way I lead today.
Over time, I discovered my entrepreneurial spirit, beginning with my own cleaning business in West Hollywood. In the early nineties, I moved to Palm Springs, where I opened the Top Hat Playhouse. Through theater and community involvement, I found confidence and a true sense of belonging. That love of “putting on a show” ultimately evolved into a lasting passion for hospitality.
A major turning point in my life was getting sober and staying sober. My recovery, and the support I found in a 12‑step fellowship and in Palm Springs, grounded me in gratitude, accountability, and service to others. It changed not just how I live, but how I show up as a leader, mentor, and community member.
In hospitality, I truly found my home. I’ve had the privilege of helping build and operate restaurants like EIGHT4NINE, 849 Fine Catering & Events, and Willie’s Modern Fare, all with the goal of creating stylish, welcoming spaces where everyone feels seen and cared for. My approach is very hands‑on and heart‑forward—hospitality, to me, is about making people feel like they belong the moment they walk through the door.
Today, I see my role as bigger than running restaurants. I’m committed to giving back—to supporting local causes, championing the arts, lifting up my team, and using my platforms to help build the kind of inclusive, joyful Palm Springs I would have needed as a kid. My journey from hardship to hospitality is really a story of community, recovery, and the power of turning pain into purpose.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Growing up, I faced a difficult home life and left school early, which meant I had to start working and fending for myself much sooner than most. That created a lot of insecurity and fear, but it also taught me resilience, grit, and the importance of treating people with dignity because I knew what it felt like not to have that.
Addiction was another major struggle in my life. Getting sober—and staying sober—has been one of the hardest things I’ve ever done, requiring me to face my past, rebuild trust, and learn a completely new way of living. Working a recovery program while running businesses forced me to practice honesty, humility, and accountability every single day, even when it was uncomfortable.
On the business side, building restaurants and catering operations from the ground up has never been easy. There were times of financial strain, sleepless nights over payroll and rent, and constant pressure to keep standards high while managing staffing issues, seasonality, and unexpected crises like the pandemic. I’ve had to make painful decisions, like letting people go or rethinking concepts, and there were moments when it felt like everything I’d built could disappear overnight.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
EIGHT4NINE Restaurant & Lounge and Willie’s Modern Fare are rooted in the belief that dining should feel both special, welcoming, and elevated without ever being intimidating. At our core, we are hospitality-driven brands, focused on creating memorable experiences through thoughtful food, attentive service, and beautiful, comfortable spaces.
EIGHT4NINE is known for its vibrant energy, stylish mid-century–inspired setting, craft cocktails, and approachable yet refined cuisine. It has become a go-to destination for celebrations, community gatherings, and private events, offering everything from intimate dinners to large-scale receptions and weddings. Willie’s Modern Fare, by contrast, is more intimate and timeless—warm, cozy, and refined—featuring polished comfort food, an excellent cocktail program, and signature experiences like Afternoon Tea. Together, the two restaurants complement each other while sharing the same standards of quality and care.
What sets us apart is our hands-on approach and our deep connection to the community. We are not corporate concepts—we are owner-operated, relationship-driven, and personally invested in every guest experience. Our teams are trained to read the table, not rush the moment, and create service that feels genuine rather than scripted. We are also known for our catering and private-event expertise, delivering restaurant-quality food and service in both on-site and off-site settings.
Brand-wise, what we are most proud of is trust. Guests trust us with their celebrations, milestones, fundraisers, weddings, and everyday dinners. Many of our diners are repeat guests who have been with us for years, and that loyalty means everything to us. We are also proud of our continued support of local arts, nonprofits, and cultural organizations—being part of the fabric of the Coachella Valley matters deeply to us.
What we want readers to know is that whether they are joining us for a casual cocktail, a romantic dinner, Afternoon Tea, or a once-in-a-lifetime event, our goal is always the same: to make them feel seen, cared for, and genuinely welcomed. Hospitality isn’t just what we do—it’s who we are.
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Sadly, I don’t remember many. As a kid I was definitely a mama’s boy — she was my protector, and I was her shield. That changed as we grew older.
