Inspiring Conversations with Tameka Mclean of Poppy Muse

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tameka Mclean.

Hi Tameka, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hello! Thanks for having me. My name is Tameka Mclean. I am a Speaker/Author, Founder and CEO of Poppy Muse Inc. Prior to getting into the Non-Profit sector, I received an education in Computer Applications and Fashion Merchandising. From 2008-2011, I interned for stylist Mel Ottenberg, designers Timo Weiland and Yigal Azrouel, and retailer Bergdorf Goodman. I combined my education in computers and merchandising to begin a career within the NY fashion industry as a Logistics Manager. For almost a decade, NYC’s garment district was a home away from home. After a while, I was no longer content with the work I was doing. Although there were moments of enjoyment, I still felt as if something was missing.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?

Was it a smooth road? Haha…I wish I could say it was. Taking on the task of starting and running the first all-girls foster care agency within Pelham, NY, as a 37-year-old African American woman, in a predominately white town; it was one of the HARDEST undertakings. There wasn’t enough support. People knew our organization existed but turned the other cheek. I didn’t worry about it. I knew that this was my purpose and life assignment. I had all the help I needed. The man above always shows up for me. So, I leaned in on my spirituality. Created a team. Networked and met great people within the community that believed in the mission. Because of that, we’re still helping aged-out foster youth today and with the help of the community and the world, we plan on doing so for the next 300 years plus.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We are proud to share that after two years of putting in the groundwork, in 2021, Poppy Muse and its founder received a Proclamation from The County Executive of Westchester County, NY. We’re still going after almost four years and will continue to provide services to foster youth, underserved youth and young adults in need. Our organization is hybrid, this is where we work both virtually, and on the ground where services are needed. We’re also excited to share that we just started a second chapter in Charlotte, NC. We have helped youth hailing from different cities and states within the US. As a matter of fact, our first “muser” is from California. After graduating college, she has returned to the organization, to pay it forward as a volunteer pro-bono legal aid assistant. The services we provide are Health + Wellness, life skills and Career Development. These programs are designed to give youth foundational skills for a lifetime of success. We also provide financial support to cover small bills, cost of books and tuition via our “Emergency Displacement Fund”.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Something surprising that most people may or may not know about me is that I became a first-time author in 2021 to a book titled “11 Steps to Self-Sufficiency” Take Action by Taking the Steps. This is a lifelong guide to current/former foster youth and youth in underserved communities.

Secondly, Poppy Muse has an online shop, www.at11pm.com. You can purchase t-shirts, hoodies and more. You choose your garment based off of your favorite pocket quote. All proceeds go back to foster youth in need.

Lastly, people don’t know that I am very domestic and really enjoy in-home DIY projects.
