Today we’d like to introduce you to Steve & Sean.
Hi Steve & Sean, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I first developed a passion for the industry working in jewelry stores in the mall. I later expanded my knowledge by attending the Gemological Institute of America and learned the pawn business from a family member. I knew I always wanted to run my own business- so in 1988, I made the leap and opened Mr. Steve’s Pawn Shop with the goal of building something that would serve the community with fairness and respect.
I worked 7 days a week for three years to get the shop off the ground. We were just making a name for ourselves…and then came the 1992 Rodney King riots. Everything I worked for was burnt to the ground, literally. I was devastated. But we found a new location down the street and rebuilt the business from the ground up through hard work, long hours, and a commitment to treating the community right.
From the beginning, our philosophy has always been simple: “You must give respect to earn respect” and “Where integrity and customer service is #1”- that quote is even plastered on our shop’s wall. That mindset helped us earn the trust of our community, and that trust is what has allowed the business to grow and thrive for almost 40 years.
Giving back to the community has always been a big part of who we are as a business. Over the years we’ve taken part in food drives, offered free holiday photos with Santa, helped fund funerals for members in our community, and tried to lend an extra helping hand to those suffering through difficult times. The community has supported us for decades, so it’s important that we support them as well.
Today, we remain a proud family-owned and operated business. My son Sean has been working at the shop for about 15 years and is running the business alongside me, and my daughter Meagan, worked in the shop for a few years and designs and runs our website and online sales. I’m proud to say that they will carry on the Mr. Steve’s name with the core values it was built on. What started as a small pawn shop has grown into a multi-generation family business, and we’re proud to still be serving the community that helped build it nearly 4 decades later.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. One of the biggest ongoing challenges has been the way pawn shops are portrayed in the media, movies, and television. They’re typically shown as businesses that take advantage of people and knowingly accept stolen property-but the reality is very different.
The pawn industry is actually one of the most heavily regulated industries out there. Every transaction requires a current government-issued photo ID and a fingerprint. Every item we take in—whether it’s for a loan or for sale—is uploaded daily to the Department of Justice so law enforcement can monitor it. We’re also voluntary members of the California Pawnbrokers Association (CAPA), which works to uphold ethical standards and ensure pawnbrokers follow strict local, state, and federal laws and regulations. I was honored to serve on the CAPA board, where my role was encouraging pawn shops across California to join the association and support an important part of our industry.
A good example of how seriously we take that moral responsibility occurred in 2002 when someone brought in Jackie Robinson’s 1953 Championship Ring. As soon as we realized the significance of the ring, returning it to the Robinson family became our top priority and we immediately contacted the family and the LAPD. Unfortunately, the media later reported the story incorrectly and claimed the Robinson family discovered the ring themselves at our pawn shop. Situations like this are disheartening because they reinforce misconceptions about the industry, even though we were just trying to do the right thing.
It’s not a complete answer without again mentioning our major turning point- losing our shop during the Rodney King riots. But at the end of the day, our business has withstood the test of time through a commitment to again- honesty, fairness, and treating people with respect- you see, there’s a pattern here.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Mr. Steve’s Pawn Shop?
At Mr. Steve’s Pawn Shop, we deal in a wide range of valuable items- but we specialize in gold and diamond jewelry, luxury watches, electronics, and designer handbags. Jewelry has always been one of our biggest areas of expertise and as trained gemologists, we’re able to properly evaluate and educate our customers when they’re buying, selling, or pawning jewelry.
What really sets us apart though, is the environment we’ve created in the shop. We’ve always tried to run the business like a family, and I think people feel that when they walk in the door. We have customers whose parents and grandparents have done business with us, and now they come in themselves.
At the same time, we’ve worked hard to create a space that feels very different from what people might expect from a traditional pawn shop. Our store is clean, welcoming, and designed with a luxury feel—more like a high-end jewelry store- than what people typically picture when they think of a pawn shop. We want customers to feel comfortable browsing and shopping for beautiful items.
We’re also known for having the largest selection of inventory and for offering some of the highest loans in the area. Over the years we’ve grown beyond just the physical store and built a strong online platform as well, so customers can shop our inventory from anywhere in the country. We also offer installment options online and an in-store layaway program which gives people the opportunity to secure an item they love and pay it off over time.
One thing many people don’t expect is the level of luxury items we carry. We have a wide selection of Rolex watches, diamond engagement rings, designer jewelry pieces, and designer handbags in like-new condition that we sell for a fraction of their original retail price. Another aspect people don’t always think about is the sustainability of what we do. By purchasing pre-owned luxury items, customers are not only getting exceptional value but also participating in a more sustainable way of shopping. Buying recycled luxury goods helps reduce waste and encourages responsible consumerism, which is something we’re proud to be part of.
More than anything though, we’re most proud of the reputation we’ve built in the community and I think that shows in the relationships we’ve built and in the more than 3,000 five-star Google reviews from our customers.
At the end of the day, we want people to know that whether they need a loan during a difficult time, want to sell a valuable. item, or are looking to purchase something special, we’re here to work with them and make the process easy and comfortable.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
One piece of advice I would give to someone starting out is to understand that building a business takes time, patience, and a lot of hard work. In the early years, I worked seven days a week just trying to build a reputation and earn people’s trust. Success doesn’t happen overnight, nothing worth while comes easy, and your reputation is something that takes years to build.
Most importantly- how you treat people really matters. If you treat people with respect, they remember that and they come back. Many of our customers have been with us for decades. That kind of loyalty only comes from treating people the right way.
Another thing to note- challenges are going to happen no matter what business you’re in. There will be difficult moments, unexpected setbacks, and times when things feel uncertain. The key is staying committed and working through those challenges.
One thing I couldn’t have known early on is just how much things would change—technology, social media, advertising, and the cost of living all play a huge role in business today. The way businesses connect with customers and operate is constantly evolving. No matter how long you’ve been doing something, you always have to be willing to learn, adapt, and keep moving forward.
