Today we’d like to introduce you to Shatara Featherstone.
Hi Shatara, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’m a stylist from the Bay Area by way of Fairfield. Hair has always been a passion of mine. My friends and family quickly became my first clients. After high school, I began to enter the hair industry. Working with local photographers, stylists, and makeup artists to further build my portfolio. I also transformed my apartment at the time into a mini salon. Working sun up to sun down. As I began to build my clientele including a few celebrities, I relocated to my first salon suite. At this moment, I realized I was a brand. Along the years, I’ve branched into other entrepreneurial endeavors, including a women’s boutique called Laydees 1st Boutique and a laundry service called The Cleaning Laydee. Two locations later, I am now in my new salon, which includes my two businesses under one roof. 4000 sq feet includes, my salon, salon suites, womens boutique, and laundry service located in the back of the property. Entrepreneurship has changed my life. Although it has its challenges, the outcome is rewarding.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Unfortunately, social media glamorizes entrepreneurship and excludes the challenges. I have lost and gained a lot over the years. I’ve learned from each experience and strive to overcome my current challenges. Learning how to navigate through the industry has been one of my greatest challenges. The ups and downs of clientele, product knowledge, and business practices have been a struggle. Overtime I’ve learned to take the good with the bad and learn from my mistakes
As you know, we’re big fans of Laydee’s 1st Boutique. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
With 10+ years of experience in the beauty industry, one consistent problem faced by customers is relaxation. Women hold many different titles, wife, mother, executive, and entrepreneur. Women often feel as if they have to spend their entire day, from business to business, to acquire their beauty needs. It was important to create an experience to fulfill every woman’s needs in one place. Hair, makeup, clothing, and accessories combined with an inviting atmosphere. Thus, Laydee’s 1st Boutique was established. Laydee’s 1st Boutique is a unique shopping and service experience for everyday women. Our goal is to uphold the confidence of women while highlighting their most beautiful attributes. Combined with hair, makeup, clothing, and accessories, Laydee’s 1st Boutique creates a one-stop-shop experience.
Laydee’s 1st Boutique was created to cater to the everyday woman. Oftentimes as moms, wives, and businesswomen, self-care is often looked over. It’s important for every woman to feel good about herself, allowing her to put her best foot forward.
Hair services, makeup, a memorable shopping experience, accompanied with a welcoming atmosphere, our brand has established itself in our community and the surrounding Bay Area. Our boutique was created to provide an experience for women to feel relieved of their normal everyday day routines. Our customers leave with a newfound confidence, ready to take on the day ahead of them.
We also offer specialty services such as bridal packages and 1 on 1 beauty classes.
I am most proud that I’ve built a relatable brand. Women often tell me how they enjoy the atmosphere of my salon and the experience I’ve created.
I want your readers to know that their dreams are possible with consistency, sacrifice, and the ability to adapt in an ever-changing market.
What does success mean to you?
