Massel Bostan began his construction career at 12 years old, working for his father’s stone and tile business in Minnesota. As part of an immigrant family from the former Yugoslavia, Massel quickly became involved in both the hands-on and administrative sides of the company, handling client communications, installations, and business operations such as taxes and invoices.
Despite pursuing higher education in Architecture, earning both undergraduate and master’s degrees at the University of Miami, Massel continued to help his family business. His professional journey includes working for high-end residential architects and major commercial firms, eventually specializing in computational design for complex projects in Los Angeles.
In 2024, Massel founded STON Handyman Company, honoring his late father’s legacy by naming the business after his father’s chosen middle name. Today, Massel’s company operates in Downtown Los Angeles, combining his architectural background, construction expertise, and deep industry knowledge to deliver high-quality residential and commercial projects with meticulous attention to detail.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The journey to building STON Handyman Company hasn’t been without its challenges. Like many in this field, I’ve often battled with imposter syndrome, which can be mentally exhausting. However, the hardest part has been managing my own expectation of perfection. I want to give my clients the confidence that their projects will be completed flawlessly. This requires extensive research to ensure every aspect of the project meets the required specifications. Early on, this process was time-consuming, but as I gained more knowledge about various trades and materials, I became proficient in understanding industry standards and state building codes.
One of the bigger obstacles I face is operating within the constraints of California’s handyman law, which limits the scope of work I can take on. This has restricted the growth of my business, and I’m working toward obtaining my General Contractor’s license to expand the range of services I can offer.
On a personal level, I run this business from a small apartment, which means I have to fit all my tools and materials into a single closet. Organization is crucial, and I’ve learned to manage with minimal supplies and space, making it work with what I have.
