Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria.
Hi Maria , we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Candelitas started with a simple, heartfelt idea: we wanted to make personalized Christmas gifts for our friends and family. After buying a beginner’s candle-making kit, we immediately fell in love with the craft, the scents, the colors, the creativity. That spark has grown into a business we’re truly proud of. Today we host engaging, mobile candle-making classes and private events, provide wholesale and private-label candles, and continue to develop our signature Candelitas line. Along the way, we’ve discovered that the best part of our work is connecting with people and sharing the joy of creating something beautiful together.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been smooth sailing. With zero business background, we had to learn everything, from bookkeeping to shipping regulations, without a mentor to point us in the right direction. We’ve poured countless hours, hard earned savings, and plenty of late night energy into Candelitas. Along the way we discovered that paraffin candles gave us headaches, so we switched to cleaner soy wax and spent months perfecting our candles, from wicks to fragrance loads to dye ratios, right in our kitchen. We even went nose-blind from testing so many scents!
Today our candles burn stronger and cleaner (frosting is still normal and we embrace it), and every fragrance is a nod to our Mexican-American roots like our fan favorite candle, Pan Dulce, which was featured on BuzzFeed! Each hurdle has shaped who we are, and we’re proud of the wonderful journey that brought us here.
As you know, we’re big fans of Candelitas. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Candelitas is a small batch, Mexican American candle studio built around memory inspired scents and community. We hand pour extra strong, clean burning soy candles that smell like home; imagine Pan Dulce warm from the panadería. Every fragrance begins as a personal recollection, then finds its way into a recyclable glass jar with a cotton wick.
Our work rests on four pillars. First, we offer a signature line of nostalgia rich scents, led by our BuzzFeed featured Pan Dulce candle that captures moments many of us hold dear. Second, we take candle making on the road. By packing soy wax, wicks, and fragrance oils into a mobile setup, we bring the full creative experience to private venues, offices, bridal showers, and any place where people want to craft both a candle and a memory. Third, we serve boutiques and corporate partners with wholesale and private label options, delivering custom scents, branded labels, and gifts that stand out on the shelf. Finally, we stay rooted in community through collaborations, whether co-creating keepsakes, like with Daniel’s Jewelers, or hosting pop-ups at local markets.
Several qualities make us different. Each candle tells a story, bridging worlds through scent and offering inclusive fragrances that rarely appear in mainstream collections. Our hands-on workshops transform a simple product into a shareable experience that sparks conversation and connection. By using premium plant based wax and high quality oils, we achieve a powerful fragrance throw without the headaches associated with cheaper fillers. Above all, we infuse every order with the attentiveness of a small business, whether it is for a single jar or a thousand.
What makes us most proud, is hearing someone light a Pan Dulce candle and exclaim that it smells just like their favorite Panaderia. That instant bond and the confidence that both local shops and national brands place in our custom work reminds us we are on the right path.
If readers take away one idea, let it be this: Candelitas offers powerful scents and heartfelt experiences that honor culture, craftsmanship, and community, one candle or class at a time.
What’s next?
We are channeling our energy into three interconnected priorities that will deepen our roots and broaden our reach.
One priority centers on creating inclusive theme focused workshops. We are designing new class formats such as “Mommy & Me,” “Martinis and Candlelight,” and “Date Night.” Each session welcomes every skill level and celebrates shared experiences. By tailoring themes around seasons, cultures, and special occasions, we aim to build creative spaces where everyone feels represented and inspired.
Another priority is forging stronger collaborations within the community. We plan to co-create scent collections with local cafes, and to partner with artists for limited edition labels. These collaborations allow us to highlight heritage while weaving richer stories into every candle we pour.
Finally, we are expanding our wholesale footprint. We are seeking new relationships with boutique retailers, gift shops, and corporate gifting programs that value clean ingredients and cultural storytelling. Placing our candles on more shelves will let customers across the country experience scents that feel like home.
Each of these goals remains true to our mission of sharing memory inspired fragrances and creative moments that celebrate culture, craftsmanship, and community.
