Inspiring Conversations with Lisa Marie Cameron of Styled by LMC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Marie Cameron.

Hi Lisa Marie, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My love for fashion started at a very young age. I was involved in theater, dance and acting since the age of five. Being around costumes, fashion and sets really intrigued and fascinated me. My love for fashion grew throughout my life and really evolved in College. I attended Hawaii Pacific University on a full dance athletic scholarship. Hawaii and this dance team gave my creative side the ability to really thrive. I designed our team wear, performance costumes and worked on brand deals. After Completing my business degree at HPU my love for styling and fashion was really just a hobby that I loved so much, styling the team and friends but I wanted it to be more. I applied to a variety of fashion schools throughout the USA & Europe and chose FIDM in Los Angeles because I felt it would be the best fit & school for me. I wanted to be involved in the entertainment world, work with artists, actors, dancers, and performers and really let my creativity shine. I drove across the country from Ontario Canada and moved to Los Angeles knowing no one in the hope that my passion for styling and fashion would help me thrive. I attended FIDM starting in 2014 and completed my visual communications degree. Here I learned where to perfect current experience, gain new skills, and learn the ropes of how the industry works and how to attack it when finished school. Here I was really able to grow and evolve in a way I never expected. FIDM gave me the confidence to set out on my own.

During FIDM I interned under multiple stylists already working in the industry. Here I gained hands-on knowledge and experience that I couldn’t learn in school. After finishing school, I set out on my own and became my own boss, a stylist. Super terrifying but I was willing to do as much work as it took to get there. My first client was actress & singer Alyson Stoner. We worked on music videos, red carpets, press events and photo shoots together. Working with her and building her style started my career. After that word of mouth helped me grow my cliente. I started working with Allison Holker who is still one of my clients today.
During the beginning of my career as a freelance stylist, I did a lot of  long days and nights. Working on photo shoots for no pay, assisting established stylist’s, to continue gaining knowledge and experience. It was really when I started working with Colton Underwood that my career set off in a way I didn’t expect. Styling him as a bachelor contestant, he then introduced me to other men that were contestants on his season and then it just kind of took off. All strictly word of mouth and referrals. Knowing that the constant love and appreciation was continuing to come my way, was truly remarkable. This Made my confidence as a stylist grow immensely. Now I work with over 20 different bachelor nation contestants. We work together on creating their style esthetic, building their wardrobes. I style them for events, photo shoots, red carpets and much more. Almost 10 years now of being in LA I can’t believe where I’m at,The consistent work, the wonderful clients are such unforgettable experiences. If I told myself back in 2014 when I was leaving Canada that this is where I’d be I would have said you were lying. I’ve had the opportunity to style for such fantastic TV shows like Disney Fairytale weddings, HGTV’s Design Star, Netflix’s “Coming out Colton”, Karamo Brown for Queer Eye Seaons 2,3,4 & Mena Massoud for Evolving Vegan. . Setting records on styling the first ever same-sex couple on the Cover of “The Knot” magazine. Styling Karamo Brown as the host for Vanity Fair after the Oscars party for two years in a row. This is just to name a few, but these and many more projects I’ve been a part of are truly unforgettable. I’m blessed to have such a wide variety of projects under my belt, and clients that trust me to do what I love. My clients are my life and I love each and everyone one of them. It’s wonderful to work with so many different personalities, makes each one of their style unique and different. It’s pretty cool I get to create with them and evolve their looks . This career that I’ve built for myself has taken time and so much hard work but I’m so proud of it. I have such great clients, and have gotten to style some pretty incredible people and projects.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
To be honest, this road for me as a stylist has had its challenges along the way, but it has been pretty great too. At the beginning, figuring out how to get work and where to find it. Making sure I continued to create and work on projects even if it was me putting them together myself, this would help me achieve my career goals and evolve my portfolio in the future. I was willing to work all day, every day but the challenge was finding the styling work and the right styling projects that made sense for me. Not every job makes sense for you and will work for you and your brand, that was something I had to realize. Being in this industry there are waves of work, sometimes you can be so busy you don’t know how you’ll get it all done and other times you’ll have nothing going on at all. This is tough mentally because being a creative person, always on the go and then it just stops, I can go a little mad. Lol, this is usually when my best ideas come to me because we crave that creativity and energy. I tend to figure out how to fill my time with new and interesting projects digging into how to make my client’s style more unique.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I am a celebrity wardrobe stylist, Image consultant and personal shopper. I work with a variety of actors, actresses, artists, dancers, performers, and more. I am known for styling celebrities for red carpet events, press, TV shows, reality TV shows, travel, photo shoots and more. With almost 10 years experience behind me I’m able to really pull out my client’s personality through style choices. This allows them to portray their inner self through their wardrobe, outfits and clothing creating that inner confidence. I believe this sets me apart and my clients really trust me. I never push my clients to wear certain things because I find not listening doesn’t help them feel more confident or beautiful. It’s all about body language. If a client feels great in something their whole mood changes. I really pay attention to this to make my styling the most successful. You want your clients to feel good when leaving you, feel confident like they can conquer the world. Honestly an outfit can do that, I swear . For example, you have two amazing looks, 1 I think looks better stylisticly or 1 they feel better in – Hands down they are going to look better in the one they feel better in, It will exude out of them. I know my clients appreciate that I pay attention to this because in the end it’s them wearing it and they need to feel good, confident, beautiful and most important like themselves.

I am also known for image consulting, personal shopping and wardrobe/closet overhauls. I work with people who want to revamp their style, wardrobe or create a new one. I dive into their closets/wardrobes and see what’s missing. Get to really know who they are, what they want to portray with their style. Then I figure out what’s the best way I can make this happen for them. The overall goal is to make these clients feel as confident as possible in how they feel and dress every day. Helping them with style choices but also Guiding them on having style choices come more naturally to them when shopping by teaching them little tips and tricks. When I’m with a client and that light goes on and they get what I see is just amazing. Their whole body language changes and you can tell they feel good, and understand how to do this next time on their own. That’s always the goal. The fact that adding a belt or changing a jacket to finding that perfect dress for their body shape can change a mood, and their outlook on shopping or styling, well it’s pretty spectacular.

I’m most proud of what I’ve been able to accomplish on my own.  Coming from Canada not knowing anyone in LA to having such a fantastic roster of clients and projects. It’s pretty incredible to think at one point I didn’t know when the next job would be here, scrounging for work to now being double booked weeks at a time or having the opportunity to work with people I watched growing up on TV. It’s surreal. When I started out styling, I wouldn’t have dreamed of what I have accomplished and now I have my own great team working for me and a list of fantastic projects coming up. I think though, having so many of these clients fully trust me and listen to the recommendations I make. That I can really change someone’s mood or day that’s the best part of the job. By finding the perfect outfit, I can create emotion because the look reminds them of someone to something or dive into a place of inner self confidence and beauty they haven’t experienced. It’s remarkable work and I really still love it after all these years.

I want people to know you don’t have to be a celebrity or on TV to have a stylist or to work with one. I find being an image consultant really helps clients evolve and feel more confident in their daily lives. I love instilling that knowledge in clients and letting them see little tweaks here and there to outfits can make a world of difference. It can really help.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I would say I’m definitely a risk taker, especially when it comes to my career. I think my whole career has been a risk. The biggest risk for me was quitting my stable job in Canada and moving all the way across the country to start a journey I didn’t know I would succeed at. After completing an undergrad degree in Hawaii and going back to school at an older age, that was scary for me. My sister pushed me to apply to fashion school, and believed in me more than anyone, Even just applying to schools felt like a big risk for me. If she didn’t push me to do that, I wouldn’t be here. The whole LA journey, that was a massive risk and paid off HUGE. You truly never know what to expect when moving to LA and how hard the industry is going to be. There are a lot of people doing what I’m doing here, trying to make it, trying to style and it can be tough to succeed. It’s always risking trying to make sure your work stands out from the next. So I feel every day can be a risk lol. Pushing yourself constantly to choose and create the best way that works for your personal brand.

In detail, stylists take risks every day really. When they are on set at a photoshoot, fitting a client for a red carpet. There is a lot of pressure to have the client look amazing, to read right on the carpet or in the photos, and just your personal choices can be a risk. There is always the fear of the public disliking choices you make that you love especially when working with clients in the public eye. You may choose to push yourself, change it up or make a style choice that someone else may not or may not like or understand. I’ve always felt that those risks sometimes pay off and sometimes don’t. Someone is always going to love or hate what you do. But if my clients are happy and they feel amazing and I’m confident with the style choices then that is what matters. At the end of the day if I’m happy with the styling outcome and the client is then we have success.
