Inspiring Conversations with Kenneth Ko of Moxie Lounge & Karaoke

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kenneth Ko.

Hi Kenneth, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
In 2018, we built a Japanese sushi and skewer restaurant with professional karaoke from scratch—literally starting with four empty walls. We wanted to create a high-quality venue, not a typical nightlife spot.
Right after we opened, COVID hit. It was a massive challenge, but with the support of our team, we survived. That experience taught me a lot about business.
Today, our dream has come to life. Our customers range from kids to 60-year-olds celebrating their birthdays. We successfully offer a fresh, fun experience for people of all generations to hang out and connect.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As I mentioned, we hit the pandemic right after opening. Back then, we were facing daily challenges—staff shortages, a drop in customers, constantly changing government mandates, and supply chain issues that drove up costs.
To make things harder, because our business model isn’t about serving simple finger foods, our kitchen staffing was incredibly tight. The rising cost of high-quality ingredients also took a huge toll on our bottom line.
To be completely honest, we still haven’t fully recovered from the impact of the pandemic even today.
However, because we were so short-staffed back then, the other shareholders and I had to roll up our sleeves and get heavily involved in daily operations. The hands-on experience we gained during that tough time has turned out to be incredibly valuable, and it still has a very positive impact on how we run the business today.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We are a unique Japanese dining and entertainment concept that combines restaurant-grade cuisine—specializing in premium sushi and skewers—with a professional-grade karaoke experience. Our mission from day one was to break the stereotype of traditional nightlife venues and create a high-quality, welcoming space. We built everything completely from scratch, starting with just four empty walls back in 2018.
Shortly after opening in 2019, the pandemic hit. As a brand-new business, we faced daily battles with severe staff shortages, changing government mandates, and skyrocketing ingredient costs. Because we serve authentic, freshly prepared Japanese cuisine rather than simple finger foods, our kitchen operations were under immense pressure. Honestly, the restaurant industry is still recovering from those impacts today. However, this crisis forced the partners and me to get heavily involved in daily, hands-on operations. That challenging experience ultimately made us more resilient and deeply refined how we run our business.
What sets us apart—and what we are most proud of brand-wise—is that we have successfully turned our vision into reality. Today, we have created a brand-new element for social gatherings. We are incredibly proud to be a venue that brings people of all generations together, hosting everything from kids’ birthday parties to 60th birthday celebrations. We want readers to know that when they visit us, they aren’t just getting great food or great entertainment; they are experiencing a resilient, passionate brand dedicated to creating unforgettable memories for every age group.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I believe the most important quality to my success is resilience coupled with a hands-on commitment to adaptability.
When we launched our business, we built everything from scratch, only to be immediately tested by a global pandemic. In the hospitality industry, a crisis like that brings daily, unpredictable challenges—from severe staffing shortages to skyrocketing supply costs. Instead of stepping back, my partners and I rolled up our sleeves and got deeply involved in the daily kitchen and floor operations.
It was during this incredibly tough period that I realized true success isn’t just about having a great vision; it’s about the grit to endure the hardest days, the willingness to do the hard work alongside your team, and the agility to evolve. This resilience is exactly what allowed us to not only survive the pandemic but to thrive today as a venue that brings people of all generations together
