Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelisha Mills.
Hi Kelisha, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’m a wife, mom of four and entrepreneur for over 15 years. My story started as a nine year old girl living in the southern part of the Caribbean Island of Trinidad & Tobago. Living in the Caribbean, it is hard to define poor. My sibblings and I had all that we needed, but there were also hints that I picked up (even at that age) that we were not rich.
I had an entrepreneurial spirit and wondered what it would feel like to create something and get money in return. I made crochet ribbons for girls’ hair and sold them for $2 per pair. Everyone door I knocked on in my village bought my ribbons just to support me.
That experience, when I think about it, is much like what I experience today, but with much more structure. I started my career in Procurement at the age of 19. The experience helped me when I started my first business at the age of 25. My husband and I started a high-end Office Furniture and Stationery business.
When the economy crashed in 1998, our business felt the effects of the recession because our biggest client, the Government, decreased their spending drastically. We had to close the business eventually. We sold our assets and moved back in with my mother-in-law. After three years of being depressed and sad about my situation, on my 35th birthday, I DECIDED to make a change in my life and get back to where I used to be: A Successful Entrepreneur.
I did courses on Coaching and started a Coaching business that was especially for mom entrepreneurs like myself. That was the beginning of the building of my “tribe” that supports and rallies for me today.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely has not been a smooth road, but rather very bumpy with large potholes and floods. There were also bridges and great people to help me along the way.
My main struggle was with my mental health. When the business was closed, I went into a deep depression. I did not feel like myself. I didn’t want to interact with people and my children were getting the shell of me. My marriage became very strained as well. I wondered how I could let myself get into this situation at that phase of life, and also felt like my children did not deserve to pay for our lack of finances and business opportunities.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My business offers two types of services:
1. Procurement Services for Government Organizations. We are an official Government Contractor that provides general procurement items.
2. Luxury Retreats and Events for Women/Mom Entrepreneurs. We connect ambitious Mompreneurs around the world. We come together in person and online in relaxing and beautiful environments to share how we do life, family and business in a way that promotes our personal growth, mental health and financial wholeness. We are truly so much stronger together!
Brand-wise, we are most proud of our recently concluded Ultimate Mompreneur Brunch last October. This event was designed to provide a space for moms in business to connect, learn, and grow. Our speakers shared their personal experiences, successes and challenges they’ve faced while balancing business and family. Attendees also had the opportunity to network and collaborate with other like-minded individuals. This event was all about celebrating and empowering moms in business and the support system that helps make it all possible.
The Ultimate Mompreneur Brunch is the premier 1-Day event for ambitious Mom Entrepreneurs who value business strategies, life management and help to make their life more peaceful, organized, and stress-free.
Our event boasts of high-level interviews and discussions, a quality and targeted community, and beautiful environments. The event was conceptualized to fulfill not only the need for social connection with like-minded mom entrepreneurs but to also provide an experience for the amazing women who often feel like they don’t deserve quality time for themselves.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love the energy and vitality that the city brings. When you hear the word Los Angeles, you get a sense of quality, opportunity and community. I believe there can be more events that bring together and highlight different diaspora of women who are entrepreneurs.
