Today we’d like to introduce you to Kat Henderson.
Kat, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started my mobile bartending company to have more freedom. I had worked hard as a student, earned a degree in Math from UCLA, got a corporate job in insurance… and realized when I had arrived at what I thought was my life goal – that it wasn’t fulfilling. At all. Sure I had money, a house, a nice car … but I didn’t have time. For anything: for myself, my family, my friends, resting, doing the things I really loved doing. I had a moment as COVID was winding down that THIS CAN’T BE IT. I took some time off, allowed myself to relax (I had to re-learn it!), and figured out what I wanted to do next. I always enjoyed cooking, and love going to bars and try new drinks… so I thought why not become a bartender! I took a bartending class, got my alcohol certification, and started working at events and bars around LA. I saw a lot of opportunities for improvement in the places I worked at, so I decided to start selling non-alcoholic cocktails at Alameda nightmarket in DTLA.
Then things took a dark turn: I was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer. I had to fight my way through chemo and radiation, and I’m happy to say I came out cancer-free at the other end. I realized once again – just as I did with my corporate job – that life is too short not to live it to its fullest. I wanted my own thing, be in full control, and have the freedom to make my own schedule. The idea to start my own event bartending company was born. I got my all of my courage, strength and knowledge from bartending and the night market together, and founded PARTY KAT – a mobile bartending service for private events. It’s definitely not been the easy route but it’s immensely fulfilling. I am happy to be alive another day, doing what I love, and enjoying the freedom my business brings me.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not! My struggles mainly came in areas that at first I didn’t even think about: marketing and advertising! Sure I make delicious cocktails, sure I can make equally good non-alcoholic ones, sure I can make them fast, remember customers, and have a good conversation all at the same time… but if nobody knows I even exist – I won’t get hired and all of my knowledge and passion is useless. I learned to embrace challenges, and educated myself. It’s an ongoing process and I continue to learn every day.
